The proper moniker for the series of engines is Gen 3/4 Gm small block V8's.

they encompass everything from the alumenum L33 front wheel drive high compression V8 put into Impala SS's To the LSA and LS9....with a huge list of variant's in between.....there are seriously thousands of combinations and
variations spanning its 17 year production.
From the 5.3 LM7 that has a 8-5-1 compression ratio from the factory making it perfect for pouring HUGE amounts of boost through (Check out car crafts wright up on it)to the LS7 427 cubic inch monster.
They are cheap to buy, cheap to maintain and more reliable then any other V8 ever made. Call bull shit all you want the LM7 has the least reported issues out of any V8 engine then in production(1999-2006)

If you can't tell.....I am a Gen 3/4 lover......I understand there are other great engines being made and some great ones from the past....my S50 has over 312000 on it with no internal or HG work but for my money if you want to make power and don't care if your car is "JDMTIGHT"
you can't go wrong with some good o'l displacement.
All LS engines are all aluminum. It isn't an LS engine if it isn't aluminum. Yes there all "LS BASED" but that doesn't make them and LS. Also the L33 came in 05-07 chevy trucks. It was an option and its an all aluminum 5.3. It has factory LS6 heads (799 casting) and a high compression (9.9:1) than the normal 5.3 (compression 9.5:1). Also LQ4's are not rare and are not worth anyone's time. Buy an LQ9, not an LQ4. Also when most people refer to LSx they are just saying LS series engines whether that is an LS1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9. So to make it clear. If someone says they have an LS and it isn't a 5.7 liter or larger and isn't ALL ALUMINUM then it is NOT an LS. Please throw the word LS round like it's nothing.

I'm almost done with my LS6 soon. My set up with be stock bottom end, stock 243 heads with PRC dual valve springs, MS4 cam, long tube headers, LS6 intake or maybe BBK intake, 90mm throttle body and 42 lbs injectors. I should make 430-440hp to the wheels.
If you're on a tight budget, pick up a 4.8 or 5.3, they're $300-500 at a junkyard with low miles and warranty and go from there. Stay away from 98 LS1 as they are trash.

4.8 and 5.3 both iron and will hold alot of power under boost. LQ4 and LQ9 or 6.0 are also iron, but LQ4 has lower compression pistons while the LQ9 is high compression. My friend's camaro with a stock LQ9, MS3 cam, LS6 intake, full exhaust and tune put out 430whp

LSX means it's a engine put together off different 4 gen chevy engines. Example: LQ9 with 243/799(LS6) heads, or LM4(4. with 241(LS1) heads.
