We're trying to remove the chain so we can take the head off my coupe. But I can't figure out how to do this the best way. Suggestions?
Thanks

That's the problem, it's not coming off, cam's just moving.

put i believe a 19 on it and have someone hold it, get a phatty breaker bar and crank on it, or better yet an impact wrench

Yeah, we're going to get an impact wrench.

hopefully what i said made sense.... there should be a place right inside the head to fit an open end wrench to keep the thing from rotating, then you can really crank on the front bolt. good luck

Yea the camgear bolt is tough as hell to loosen. i had to get an extension bar thing on the wrech and wrapped a rag around it... it was tough.

You don't use an impact on that...
You CAN, but don't.
You should have somewhere on the cam you can grab with a wrench, grab it and loosen.
Not 100% sure how SOHC are, but I'm sure its a single cam, so it shouldn't be too hard..
As always, the FSM has very good info.

Okay, breaker bar.
You should have somewhere on the cam you can grab with a wrench, grab it and loosen.
And that's confusing.

Put your wrench on the cam gear bolt and give a sharp tap with a hammer. You need a quick hit to break it loose. A steady pull will just turn the engine over.

if you need to brace it while whacking with a hammer, you can stick a screwdriver through one of those holes on the gear to hold it from rotating the crank, just dont put too much pressure on that. sharp jolts to the bolt will probably break it easier and with less strain on surrounding parts than hanging from it and doing pull-ups. sorry about my original post, i was used to DOHCs, but I just went and looked at my SOHC, yup, no extra wrenching spot.
