ok so is there a way that i am suppose to look at the ECU myself. i read that if i loosen and tighten a screw that it will flash numbers for the problem that my car is having. i dont see a screw and i would really like to have my car in better shape without having to go to a shop. please help me!

It doesn't flash numbers, it flashes a red light a certain number of times. You have to right down the flash patterns and then match them to the codes.
If you have a 97-98 S14 then you have OBDII which means you can go to autozone and they'll do a diagnostic test for free.

2 10mm bolts are holding the ecu against the chassis, undo that and spin it around, you will see a flathead screw and a hole with a LED light in it, turn it counterclockwise a full rotation for 2 seconds, then spin it back, should start blinking. slow blinks are the first number, fast blinks are the second number. it will produce a two digit code(s) google 240sx ecu codes for the list.
But if it's OBDII, why bother with it when you could just take it to somewhere like autozone and get it checked for free? And you don't have to worry about accidentally reading a code wrong.
JJ's advice is accurate though, and a good option for anyone with OBDI, instead of paying a shop $35+ dollars to do a diagnostic test.

Oh ok, I thought you had a kouki because of your user name. Well I was able to find a place in Oakwood, GA (probably not worth the drive for you) that would do OBDI diagnostic checks for $35.
If you're ever in that area (Road Atl is right down the road), I think the place is called Stratus. I'll double check for you if you actually wanna check it out.

Do like JJ said, and remove the ECU bolts and turn it so you can see the led and the mode screw. Turn the ignition on and then turn the screw counter clockwise and wait 2 seconds, then turn it back clockwise. the codes start flashing slow blinks then fast. The slow is the first number in the code, and the fast is the second.
For example: blip...blip...blip...blip.blip.blip.blip = code 34. you can down load a factory service manual online or google Nissan codes. Or post here and someone can tell you. Good luck.

um so yeah i did it but i think i fudge my self test thing up. because i went past the stopping point on accident and when i was reving the car afterward it kept flashing. if im not mistaken i saw it flash 5-5. couldnt find anything on 5-5 could have been 4-5,5-4,5-6 someting like that. so i took it up to mainstream and they said that it was probably just my automatic transmission messing up. making sensor go off when there really wasnt a problem with the engine.

Code 55 means no fault found.
ok then all i have to do is maybe find myself a new ecu, because the self test is screwed up. then remove the plastic thing that is making noise from the tensioner and then it will be all good.
thanks for the help!!
(most likely going to no deal with the ecu. and just wait until i get my swap started)

i think when i was using the flat head to loosen the screw. i went past the point. so now i dont know if i broke the self test screw or not.
