It's not really clear if I can pull the engine without the transmission, just leaving it in there or not. Can I just unbolt it and pull the engine?
My mind is blank for right now, but I know I had more questions....

from what ive read
its easiest just to unbolt the engine and trans, unhook everything else and drop the transmission right out under the car... drop it down then lift the car off of it with an engine lift

everyone I know usually take the engine/tranny out the top in one piece.

really? do you have to disconnect powersteering lines *aside from the pump* if you pull it up the top? or do you even have to take the crossmember out at all?

that method of dropping the motor through the bottom requires the removal of the front subframe iirc. everyone that i know that has done a swap usually pulls it like how down shift mentioned.

ive pulled a shit load... unplug everything and it comes out the top. leave the tranny on cause thats just making more work for you.

Right now I'm replacing my engine/tranny.
I pulled out my tranny first. I figured it would have been easier to pull out if I pulled them out seperate. I wish I hadn't. It probably wouldn't have been so hard if I had a manual, but I kept getting caught on ATF lines. It's not too much trouble. The hardest part to that is weaving in and out of places to get to tranny bolts. It helps if you have something with a swivel head in your socket set to get to the top bolts. It helped a lot to take the exhaust manifold & exhaust off. More work, that I probably didn't really need.
I would probably rather pull them both out at once. Make sure you have EVERYTHING unplugged.
Also, when you say "it's not clear". What are you referring to?

my tranny is fine, i'm just pulling my engine to tear it down and mildly rebuild it. from what i know a lot of people pull them both to fix both, but i'm just pulling my engine, fixing it, and putting it back on, no changes. so with that being said, would it still be easier to pull the tranny with the engine?

hm..
i pulled one on an ae86 with the tranny still in place.. it was pretty easy.
its just more work to take the tranny off to take the motor out, as you have to, like Dgardi said, squeeze into tight spots to unbolt the tranny and shit.. its a REAL PITA.
just disconnect the mounts, driveshaft, harness and you're good to go.
just make sure you dont dent up your rad support while youre doing it.

i was ignorant too when i was swapping a blown ka24de to another ka24de....the transmission was good so i said why would i have to pull that out? ....well first of all unbolting the damn transmission from the engine is the biggest pain in the ass because there is about 4 bolts located near the top of the firewall and they are really hard to get to....then after u pull the engine, and go to put in the new one...its almost impossible aligning the engine to the tranny....so just pull them both together and save the headache

already pulled just the engine, and i didn't have a problem getting those top bolts. i used an impact wrench with a few extensions and a swivel attachment. i don't look forward to lining everything back up though.

Take the engine and tranny out in one piece! It took me and a friend about an hour to get one completely out one night. and we had no clue what we were doing

so i got took the tranny out, and got it hooked up to the engine, and dropped it back in. getting those engine mounts to line up is a pain, plus it looks like all my transmission mount bolts are stripped (i only had 2 to begin with). will it ever end?
don't answer that last question, i know it won't

Yeah.. From now on, just pull them both out together. Pulling each individually is horrible, and you will never line them back up with the tranny still bolted in. So you will have to pull it out anyways.
Also a little tip for getting the motor mount bolts to line up is to put a jack under the tranny. Then you can jack it up to help move the motor mounts back some and into the holes. Its really easy after you've done it a couple times.

you can do either or. the tranny and the engine can come out together. You need a hoist and a leveler. The leveler allows you to angle the motor as you pull back on the hoist; so the engine and tranny come out together.
Or you can unbolt all the bolts from the tranny/starter to seperate it from the engine. You may need a prybar to sepereate the engine and tranny.

You definetly do not need a leveler. I've probably pulled 50 motors.. And haven't used one yet.
