my valves tick when i start my car up in the morning, when i barely press the gas after its warmed up and when i let off the gas they tick but then slow down..
how hard is it to adjust these valves, and what are they supposed to be set too ? is a feeler gauge needed ??
thanks, guys..
this is my first 240 so im still learning..
if anyone wants to help a fellow member out, i would really appreciate it..
Read this. It gives you all of the clearances and such you need to do a valve adjustment... You will need feeler gauges.
I would suggest having someone thats done it before with you the first time you try it...
Oh and I love how it says to check clearances while engine is warm but not running. LOL

thanks..but the damn file didnt freakin work
maybe someone will lend me a hand lol
first thing i need to though is buy a manual for the car
Well thats what I was posting was that portion of the factory service manual... Why didn't it work? Just wouldn't open? Do you have a PDF reader? I tested it on another computer and it works just fine for me.
I posted the entire Factory Service Manual in the DIY section and sticked it so you may want to go download it...

in the FSM is says valve shims are needed..
where in teh heck can i get them ?? auto zone doesnt carry them
or are they called valve seats ??

went to about every autoparts store tonight and none of them had/carried valve shims..i would have to order the seats but thats not what i need at all.. more than likely im going to have to order them from nissan.. : / really excited about that one now...
The only place I would go for something like that is nissan. They shouldn't be too incredibly expensive...

hmm..
i got a package of 16 valve SEATS for mine.
i think my valve seats (seals, stem seals, whatever the fark) are bad..
causing me to smokey...
im afraid to tear my head though.. :(

i drove the car over to a friends auto shop and had one of the nissan guys take a look.. apparently i have a stretched push rod, and the best fix is a new motor..

wait a second... does our engine have pushrods?
its a dohc there arent pushrods it doesnt even have rocker arms
the cams sit right on top of the valves right?
a pushrod v8 has a cam above the crank and then pushrods push a rocker that push down the valves. orrr... are the valves called pushrods?
im confused...
okay i basically confused myself lol

not sure, thats just what the guy told me..
but before i do anything, im still going to flush the engine, and swap in synthetic oil
do these engines have pushrods ??

im looking through the manual flip posted and i see no push rods
the pushrods redivert the camshafts lifting technique.
here is our ka engine

this is a pushrod v8 diagram

see the camshaft in the middle of the engine above the crankshaft?
basically that cam pushes a little rod that pushes a rockerarm that acts like a seesaw, so that it can push down the valve
an overhead cam does a similar thing except it diverts the cam to above the head and has rocker arms which push the valves down. a DOHC has dual overhead cams which are placed individuall above the intake and exhaust valves. thus one cam works for the exhaust side and the other cam does the intake side.
i say you should break down your engines head. and investigate all your valves. honestly ive never done it but ive researched alot about it. and im about to brake down a ka24de this weekend for parts so if i have any valves i dont need ill tell yah. i might not get around to it this weekend however. im doing a swap so it depends on which head on the both engines i have is in better shape. but i will have a set of valves sitting if you need any. *one engine has 173k miles on it* other has 98k*

^ is right.
we arent "pushrod" system.
just DOHC/SOHC.
we've cams right over our vavles.. does your mechanic know what hes talking about?
i think ka24E has rocker arms... but other than that, dohc is straight cam over head/valves.

ok thanks.. that narrows my problem down to : its either the head, or a piston hitting the head ??
the mechanic was referring to a 300z engine, and must not know jack shit about the Ka's
im glad he isnt doing anything to my car..
my spare motor needs a cyl. head job done, so im thinking about giving it a set of cams, new springs, etc, etc..
these heads are aluminum right ? is it a GOOD idea to get one resurfaced after its pulled ??
my last toyota was like that..

definitely check it for irregularities/warpage.
if it checks out good, then no worries, if its a little off.. you could probably seal it with the oem HG.. but if you watn to go cometic or any sort, you need it PERFECTLY flat.
yes the heads are alum.
blocks are iron.
might as well do it yourself, if you got some hand tools and time.

yeah id replace the valves and check the head for any issues. i dont know how to resurface anything but if your head is really messed up im sure someone can fix it.
most likely the valve is effed up. unless you timed the thing HORRIBLY wrong your piston shouldnt have hit the valves. so i guess under hard stress the valve could have warped or something. it DOES get hot in there. what are valves like stainless steel? lol
neways a new set of valves or a single replacement would be good.
corect me if im wrong
if you busted a valve spring or lifter
would your piston possibly hit the valve? cuz it would be left open...

not sure about that one...
last night i changed my oil w/ synthetic (castrol syntec 10w-40) and did an engine flush.. it still ticks but not as bad..
next thing to do is find someone good with nissans and help me change a cyl head.. i cant really take the one in the car off then get it inspected/fixed and have it sit for a few days, without a ride..

Yeah, I'm actually pulling my head on the spare block I got..
My pops threw a hissy fit over dirtying up the garage.. Oh well!
But yeah, dunno.. it will take a couple days for sure.
Take your time.. make it right the first time!
^ what he said... Plan on it taking longer than you expect...

say hello to a shit ton of oil leaks...
the detergents in synthetic will eat up the carbon deposits in the gaskets and seals making the motor leak like an old porsche....

huh..
well the motor blew lastnight..
a rod went right through the block, and knocked the motor mount cockeyed..
and i have a few chunks of a piston and the connecting bolt..
