View Full Version : Need some tips for my first drift event!
So I'm planning on attending the Drift 411 event listed in the G2G section. This will be my first event that I've attended.
My S13 is pretty much ready. Everything I've done has been suspension and I still have the KA so it's slow, but I don't need power to slide...
I've done a little sliding but mostly first gear stuff in open areas. Once I get into a slide I will be find but I could use some tips on initiating the slide. I'm pretty confident that once into the turn I could clutch kick and slide around the rest of the turn, but I'd like to be able to slide into the corner which seems like the righ way to do it...
Any tips?

I use ebrake and clutch kicks to initiate. Thats all you need to get started imo. I wouldn't try and get fancy with anything else you first time out. Be careful at black hills. There are some places where you could really hurt something out there.
I will probly take it pretty easy and be conservative at first just to get used to the track...
Any hints when giong into the first turn? Maybe a walkthrough on exactly how you would take a turn or two?

I don't wanna mislead because I haven't run there personally. Just watched others. ebrake seemed to be the choice of most in the tight turn at the end of the straight. I think most people tried to feint+ebrake with 1/2 -1/3 of the straight left. Turn to outside and then correct into the turn.
Heres a video of andy drifting the track last year.

If you can't tell he starts from the back "S" curve. Also last I heard they no longer alllow cars tro manji the front straight.
I think i've just gotta figure out how fast i need to be going and i'll be fine...

damn I wish I could be there to watch you 2 spin out...lol
Good luck though...
Haha thanks ! :)
It should be loads of fun... I got some sliding in tonight since it was wet. Its SO much easier for me to slide when it's wet. I can initiate perfectly and have a consistant clean slide... Dry is a tad harder tho...

Yep! I'm really looking forward to those S curves...

those S curves meaning the chicanes?
those chicanes are TIGHT, super tight.
the straight with a sharp turn.. i've seen most just use the ebrake to get thru that and going down hill, few manji.. i dunno if they'll let ya do that on the event though.. we had a "free-for-all" day.
other than that.. theres the banked oval which you can initiate by kicking the clutch..
i think the only hard part on that course is the real tight chicanes.. becareful, you can definitely bend/break something if you fall in the dirt at the wrong angle/speed

Yah the chicanes... I'm more experienced with the first gear and some second gear slides and i've been told that those chicanes are slow and tight... I guess I'll just try clutch kicking once the turn starts and see how it goes...
I forsee a lot of spinning out :).

honestly i think dry is easier to control for me... i guess cuz i know like how fast i can take a corner and if i take it a tad faster off throttle the rear will slide out then i can choose to throttle back or what. but my 5 series i just went around a corner and threw a lil clutch and throttled it and it just went around and made alot of smoke =D but i have this weird mental thing with drifting turning right....
cuz i sit on the left side... i dont like seing the road comming at me or something i dunno... lol

you will figure it out..............
as for your car.....
i would recommend bringing different size wheels and tires. you ll know what to do with them when you get there. bring a couple of smaller, stockies with decent or good tires, if you dont have access to different aftermarket ones. play around switching them out in between runs, you ll see.....
wear you helmet, buckle all your belts up, keep your thumb out of the inner wheel, brush your teeth and drink lots of water.
good luck
