THis might be a stupid question but can a fuel pump start to fail and work some of the time and not work at other times? Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

Yep, they might start to get weak or just go bad or work better sometimes than others...

Thanks for moving and replying. If it is going bad would you still hear it when you turn the car on?

Quite possibly yes. You can get a fuel pressure gauge and put it inline to test fuel pressure to see if its bad. Or just replace it... I have a stock fuel pump for sale if you're interested.

I have checked the pressure it was fine and then the car would start. I think it is going bad because it started and then drove and when I hit around 5k it would die and then I pulled over to check to see if any lines were bad and then it wouldnt start. Then the next day it started so I went changed the fuel filter to a z32 and thought that was the problem because it drove fine for a little bit yesterday until I went to a couple of stores and when I was leaving the store it was difficult to start and I tested the rpm cut off and it did the same thing pulled in the drive way and then it wouldn't start again. I don't have a pressure guage right now so I am going to pull the line and direct it into an empty gas container and see if it is shoting fuel still.

It will most likely shoot fuel still but may not be enough pressure to make the car run.
