so im slowly getting around to fixing a few gremlins, and heres one of mine
when i put the car in 5th gear the reverse lights come on. so to ignore the problem i pulled the reverse lamp fuse. now only thing is it gets annoying to be stuck in a parking spot as people pass by and no one knows i wanna get out. so i figure its time to fix it.
so ive got the FSM and some time. and i cant read wiring diagrams to save my life. so what should i be checking?

Was the car an auto before?
It sounds like someone mixed up some wires when doing a 5spd swap.

Ok Scato im having the same exact problem with my hatch. Did you find a solution? My car has always been a 5 speed as well. Man i love the search button :)
Wires had to have been swapped. I can't think of any other reason. Is there any evidence of someone tampering with the wires? Splices?
I don't think the sensors can be swapped into each other. 5th G Sensor in Reverse hole and vice versa. I'd have to go look, though.
Im pretty sure that both are the same thread size an whatnot, and can be swapped into each other. IIRC, I pulled all mine out of my first tranny that went bad, and forgot what order they came out of in my hatch, but I dont think my reverse lights ever worked anyways.

Put the fuse back in.
See if the lights still come on when in 5th.
Find the 5th gear sensor on your tranny and unplug it and see if it plugs into the reverse sensor (sensor closest to bellhousing on passenger's side.
If that last one didn't work, take a 19mm open-ended wrench and take the whole 5th gear sensor out of the tranny and put it into the reverse light sensor's spot and vice-versa and see if it works.
If you need help come over here.

Im guessing that these sensors would have been removed when a new clutch was put in?

Why would they have been removed? I believe it did this to his car when he had his KA and it still does it now.

Yeah i talked to him about it. I bought a car that just got a new clutch put it in and it had done this sense ive had it

yeah both sensors are the same thread like jackson said.
me and my brother were careful not to switch the sensors up when we swapped bellhousings. but im sure it has something to do with that. since, like he said they are the same threads and different plugs.

your case sounds like the people who swapped the clutch swapped the sensors.
iirc two of the sensors have the same plug, one has some weird plug.

I had to drive in forth up 316 to keep from blinding people and to avoid a ticket lol. Any have a picture of where these sensors are located so i can try to swtich them?
