Ok.. I have Carina's block here, 86.5mm CP Pistons. Does anyone know the recommended ring gap?

Because this makes no sense.

Determining Ring Gap
To determine the ring end gap look for your application in the proceeding
table. ALL BORES MUST BE CONVERTED TO INCHES.
Example: Bore size is 81mm ***8211; to find top ring end gap for a
street application:
.016***8221; is the minimum allowable clearance.
CP Piston Ring Recommendations
Ring End Gap Chart
Ring Orientation Diagram
81mm/25.4= 3.189 inches
(3.189 x .005)= .016***8221;

Application Top Ring Second Ring Oil Ring
Street/Hi Bore x .0045/.005***8221; Bore x .005/.006***8221; Min. .015***8221;
Performance
Drag Racing Bore x .006***8221; Bore x .0065/.007***8221; Min .015***8221;
Circle Track
Nitrous/Turbo Bore x .0065/.007***8221; Bore x .007/.008***8221; Min .015***8221;
Supercharged
Motorcycle/ATV Bore x .005***8221; Bore x .006***8221; Min .015***8221;

Should I do Street/High Bore or Turbo? I figure turbo.. So..

Top Ring should be.. .022-.023
The gap on the Ring that CAME with the pistons is .025 :confused:

Second ring should be.. .023-.028
Ring CAME .017

Oil Rings.. They don't even fit in the damn block.

So am I doing this right? Or should I be using Factory recommendations which I think is like .015??

If so.. Anyone have a ring file?

Also, it also says this.

Important: Ring sets are manufactured to fit specific bores.
For every .001***8221; over the intended bore size, ring gap will
increase by .00314***8221;

Does that mean since I'm .5 over stock my gaps should be increased by .00314x5 or, if I was running 86.5mm pistons in a 87mm block that would be the case?

Thanks for any help..

if the cylinder is the same size as the piston then standard math applies

and the top 2 rings should be the same, so just flip em.

Wait.. They should be the same, as in same design?

Not CP's. The second ring has a groove to scrape the edge and catch the extra oil I think. And different metals it seems.

And again, so obviously I need to file the other ones.

Haha! I would, if... I didn't already have that. Where do you think I got that other info from! :p

But if you notice.. There are a lot of confusing parts here. If it was simple, I could figure it out..

1. The ring gap on ring one is larger then recommended.
2. On the second page, it says "Do not modify expander in any way"

My expander won't even fit in the cylinder without it overlapping.. :(

double check that they sent you the right ring pack. when all else fails call CP tomorrow

Yeah.. Thats what I figured. :(

I'll give them a call and update as necessary.

Interested to know what you find out. Let us know after you call them...

sounds to me like you have the wrong rings.... Is your block a 87mm bore? or 86.5? I happen to have 86.5mm pistons with correct rings!

Hahah... Wonder where you got those from!?
I might have to pick those up from you.. :)

I have 86.5mm block and pistons.

About to call CP.. I'll see what I find out.

Ok, just got off the phone with them.

1st ring.
Its fine they said. Couple thousands doesn't matter.

2nd ring.
Just file to .027-.028 and it will be ok.

Oil Rings and Expander
.015 on the rails, and the expander I can cut with wire cutters, and file smooth...

Kinda makes me nervous. LoL..

That would make me nervous too!

Well what the hell man.

I measured my pistons and bore with a Dial Caliper, and both come out to 86.5mm

It has to be something weird with the rings, but he gave me the part number for the ring packs, and I have the correct ones.

maybe talk to a machine shop about this?
you dont want your rings to have not enough or too much gap..

I asked a couple local ones, they don't file rings for the public? WTF?

I think I got it now, I just have to get to work.

Thanks for the help guys!
