Ok.. Well this was originally supposed to take a couple hours. I think mine are a pain, or I just need to kill myself.
Anywho. Burnt the old ones out, hammered out the solid sleeves around the rubber, and got 3 in. Still, for the life of me, cannot get out the last sleeve to press the last bushing in.
Maybe tonight. I'm putting it off, my hands are sore.
Fuckin' Decker.

i had machine some of mine down, they were too big to press in
who's RUCA's are those?
look nice
Cut through the side like Dave said, then use a pick to go all the way down the cut to pull the sides away from the outside of the subframe that will relieve all pressure and it will come right out.
These are a bitch lol. Mine were a pain to get in but with a little dry ice and a 2x4 it wasn't that bad...

Mine fit fine, and i have no problem getting them in. Its getting the stock shit out that is a pain. RUCA's are Footwerks.

google it dude...
and holy crap....
i would just eat it away with my rotary cutoff tool :P
it looks like it would fit in there
have you tried lube....
i think lighting them on fire was a bad idea
i would have heated the metal up around it without burning them at all
burning makes it sticky... got a large air compressor?
get a rotary cutoff tool + some wheels for like 40 bucks and 5 bucks for wheels.
dremel stuff is not durable enough for that job so use the cutoff =D

Lighting it on fire is what you have to do to get the rubber out. Now there is no more rubber in there at all, so no, it wasn't a bad idea. And how the hell do I get a cutoff wheel in there. Are you insane?

the ones where you keep the rubber bushing and insert like a spacer or w/e
Here's a really good right up from another forum that I was reading through just the other day. I know a lot of people burn the old bushings, but you don't HAVE to do it that way. It's just personal preference and what tools you have available I guess.

Anyway, maybe that thread can give you some ideas on how to get the rest out and get them ready for the sexy new hard-on bushings.

A friend of mine did my sub frame bushing install. I am so glad he did. Those collars are a bitch. We stripped the frame down, hit them with an air chisel, and then used the press to pop them out.
hellfire
01-09-2008, 04:12 AM
I have a press, but I can't really get the subframe up there to press them out. I could take the whole thing apart, but ugh. I'm going to try beating on it a little more.
Tyler

Yea we took it down to the frame first thing. Saved time in the end. Plus great chance to hit your frame with some paint.
hellfire
01-09-2008, 04:27 AM
Yeah, I was planning on painting it if it went smoothly. But its taking too long to care. I'll paint everything when I drop the subframe again for full bushings. Then I'll have to disassemble everything to press all the new bushings in.

Why not just do them all right now? Rip it apart. Replace all the arms youre gonna do then bushing everything else. Paint stuff then put it all back to gather in one go?

I read your post. Decided I would give it one more shot and if not, just do what you said. What do you know the bitch came out. Now its just being a pain to get back in becuase the holes are the exact size.
But it sure looks gansta with the suspension disconnected. LoL..

it is a bitch of a job.
i did mine in the parking lot of the apartments i used to live in and they were threatening to tow my car if i didn't take it off the jack stands which only added to the frustration.
also i didn't burn all of mine and the ones that i didn't burn were actually easier to remove. we used a sawzall to cut through the sleeve and then we used a BFH and a punch/pick to pound them out. Flip recommended that i use dry ice (thanks buddy) and then new ones slid in pretty easily with only a little bit of encouragement from a mallet.
i totally agree though, i'd charge out the ass for it too.

Tyler, wouldn't it have been just as easy to use a hole-saw, and then just use the pick and hammer tool. I haven't installed my bushings yet, but, my goal is to not have to torch them, just seems like it puts too much stress on the metal, or weakens it even.
hellfire
01-12-2008, 06:39 AM
Sure, you could do that. Most everyone just torches them. And I didn't have that size hole saw.
Tyler

I doubt I do either. Just gives me an excuse to have wierd sized drill bits in my tool box.
Have you tightened everything back up on the car or drove it yet?
hellfire
01-12-2008, 06:42 AM
Yeah, everything is back on the car. I could tell the bushings were shot everytime I jacked up the car by the diff. It would completely raise to the top before the car moved up. I would say a good 2inches of travel. But now its solid as a rock.
I'll let you know how it feels when I drive it.

Very nice. I need to order up the Energy Diff bushings. But, they are $30 and special order, haha, and according to their site, could take up to a month or so.
I dunno, I'm curious as to what differences I'll notice with the Energy inserts, and the Collars that I'm picking up from James. Or whether they will even work well together.

how can you tell if your bushings are shot (im guessing they are all are after 15 years lol) but driving the car, what is a good indication? and what exactly do they do?

They usually crack or sometimes break all the way through, or just have tons of play in them.
That was my main motivation to put all polyurethane in my hatch, haha, fuck that high-mileage play in the suspension, I want it virgin tight!

I just take the subframe to our machine shop when I do them. Well worth $60 to get all 4 pressed out. I just put the new aluminum bushings in the freezer for about 30 mins and they go in without much effort. Most machine shops can press them out for you, and its much easier than doing it any other way.
