I want to learn how to weld. I've got lots of friends with welders and am looking for some small project ideas to get started welding.

Any ideas?

Good idea.

How do you go about measureing and stuff like that to get the pieces in the right shape/place?

yeah i'd start with just flat cut outs of mild steel or w/e you plan on welding. i've been thinking quite a while of buying something like a lincoln mig-140 pro, something that can use flux core wires and learning myself.

when doing an exhaust the easiest way to do it is honestly just holding stuff up and seeing where you should put in a bend. at least thats how ive always done it. I hang out at Pauls Custom Exhaust alot (he sponsors me) and thats how he does it too. but i would def. practice before you start trying to weld an exhaust. lol

first practice heat and puddle control on flat stock... getting the feed and amp settings right is the biggest part (mig welders suck ass by the way)
then try to butt-weld two pieces of flat stock together.

im not even gonna try to teach you to tig, lol
thats for me to do

i like to have complete control over puddle size,. heat, etc

the only thing i use a mig for is to tack big parts together... thats about it
