Earlier i was talking to a buddy about brakes and he said one time he went to get his brakes done and they guy that put them in sprayed something on his pads before putting them in then lit them on fire for a moment before blowing them out.

WTF?!

Any ideas why he would have done that or was the dude just a dumbass...

Yeah but you don't usually light it on fire when you use it on car parts LOL

2 Things that come to my mind.

1. The brakes get extremely hot, and could catch fire if he sprayed brake parts cleaner (which is very flammible) directly on them while hot.

2. Could be a new way to break in brake pads to get them to adhear (sp?) quicker.

My only guess is that they weren't a carbon based brake pad, something like ceramic or semi metallic. If you did that with a carbon based it would heat up and harden/glaze the pad thus reducing the braking efficiency. My only guess if it was on a carbon based pad (organic) that they did that to extend the life of it at the expense of performance. If it was on a semi metal or ceramic i have no clue as to why that would be done.
