ok...
this is going to the biggest noog question ever...
but i don't know anything about coilovers/struts/etc.
but
a: do coilovers lower the suspension
b: do lowering springs help as much as coilovers?
c: do you need to combine the too
plz don't make me cry...
used to a working on the truck in my signature so no idea about this shock/strut combination thing

A: Both lowering springs and coilovers lower the suspension, coilovers are adjustable to where you can choose your ride height, springs do not let you adjust.
B: lowering springs are good if your on a budget and can't afford coilovers/if your just starting off and might not be ready for coilovers. Springs will lower the car and give it a slightly better/more aggressive stance with better handling than stock. Coilovers are combined as one whole unit and you generally dont take them apart, on the other hand with a strut and spring combo you can take a part and mix and match them weather it is kyb agx struts with tein s-tech springs(which is what i have) or some other type of strut and spring combo or just lowering springs with stock struts or even stock springs with a performance strut. The struts and springs are all interchangable, you can have one or the other or change them both.....if you get lowering springs its better to get a stiffer aftermarket strut with it but its not required. You are able to do alot more with a coilover than you can with a strut and spring combo. Hell im decently pleased with what i have for a daily driver but im getting coilovers in a week. It also depends on the type of driving that you going to be doing to decide which one is better for you. I hope this has helped you some.
C: i answered this above :D

i would much rather have questions asked like this than know what you ate for breakfast and how you ruined your underwear.... haha....
That S13 Guy covered it in fair detail, hopefully that gave you what you were looking for. You don't combine the two, they are different types of setups. On our cars, they are struts which are a spring/shock combination where as some vehicles the spring is completely separate and doesn't touch the shock. I didn't understand the difference at first either, but at least it's relevant to cars. Keep learning.
To break it down, and I've learned this through doing shit to my car.
To drop a car the right way, with good springs and shocks, and also with new strut mounts and boots, and bumpstops, it's seriously not that far off from a set of entry level coilovers or some Megans. $200-300. Hell, Sportlines and Tokico blues themselves are only $300 off from Megans.
Good thing with shocks and springs, is that you can buy springs, drive til struts blow, then buy new struts/mounts. Its more cost effective on a budget, because its not one huge purchase all at once. I've decided that on the new S13, I'm just gonna run it stock til I can afford some new or slightly used coilovers.

I personally would rather have a spring/strut combo for daily driving. But, my daily driver is also my track drifting/rain drifting car, therefor I have coilovers. Mine are on full soft and are still very stiff. I really like that you can adjust the stiffness and ride height with coilovers. What type of driving do you do? is it just your daily driver? I say if you drift/grip race alot get coilovers, if it is just your DD and want a stiffer ride and a little bit lower ride, get a spring/strut combo.

If you want comfort stay stock.
If you want a little more performance get springs/shocks.
If you are serious about performance (take it to the track often) or looks(want that slammed look) get coilovers.

I think Koni shocks with Eibach sportlines would be a good combo for DD. I've got Koni's and waiting for my sportline springs. :)

Just buy some coilovers and stop being a vag. Then you won't hate yourself when people start telling you your cars not low enough.

lowering springs blow stock shocks
aftermarket shocks are not a good invesment financially.
expensive new, do not resell well
mr coilovers are under 900 bucks.
damper adjustable
height adjustable
preload adjustable
great setup.
but do research before buying them and throwing them on your car.
or you will break something
