Champcar FTW!!!! Jani FTW!!! :goodjob:
Normal cars for the most part dont need spoilers, but on race cars and high end sports car they are actually needed.
Downforce doesn't really become an effective factor until you hit the 80mph 'wall'.
When dealing with aerodynamics, its set in incriments. 0-60 is one barrier, 60-80 is another, 80-140 is another, but one you hit 140, it really is like hitting a wall of air...
On the Champ Car, what we created, was instead of having the majority of the air flowing over the car pushing it down, we came up with a series of tunnels and vanes running through the under structure to 'pull' the car down. This is most noticeable in traffic during a race.
I'll use NASCAR as an example, since more people will be familiar with it. On a straight away, cars 'draft' and essentially get sucked up to the rear of the car in front, because the air behind the leading is whats called 'clean' air. Meaning that theres no turbulance. But when the car behind moves out into the 'dirty' air, it slow dramatically, and has a hard time passing the leader.
The underbody vanes eliminate this, but not completely, as some of the downforce is still derived from the top of the car. But ground level air is, for the most part, 'cleaner' air than air that is higher up.
I'll see if I can find a picture to illustrate this...
EDIT:
ok, here you can vaguely see the under vanes of Justin Wilson's car after he ramped some rumble strips

You are correct greg :goodjob:
The only reason for the spoiler on my car is so that the ass doesnt look like a bubble... lol
So greg, you help build the current champ car that they are using?
Yes. I joined the company as they were beginning the half scale wind tunnel model. And then I helped build 37 of the chassis, as well as all the bodywork to go with them. I also built Star Mazda, Formula Ford, IMSA Lite, INDY, ALMS, and a Skip Barber car.
I also built quite a few of the engines for Formula Ford and the Esperante, but I mainly did composite work.
Those cars in the pictures were the first 10 cars to be delivered. It was almost exactly a year ago today that those pictures were taken.
