yeah yeah dave is gonna say "its broken" again
but anyways ill describe the issue and how it happened
1- i dont have rubber shift boot or leather shift boot
2- my car is gay and has weird issues after my 5 speed swap
so i went to virginia for a funeral and came back. deceided to drive my car for a bit.
cranked it up cranked fine then drove it some calmly letting the engine warm up. went about 5 miles let it warm ect ect started driving semi-fast smooth though nothing nutsy. so i downshift from 3rd to 2nd and i smell this horrible smell and smoke goes fuggin everywhere in the cabin. so im like well shiz... it smelled like a motor just blew or something. then it smelled like BURNING GEAR OIL.
so i really think there was a fire in / around my transmission. im not sure how this could happen though.
my brother thinks that i let the engine warm up but the tranny was still cold.
possibly cause this issue. anyone have any input?
im gonna swap transmissions soon anyways so idk what happened
but my theory is there was a fire IN the transmission... im not sure how that could happen though.
i need to get under there and inspect wtf went wrong. im gonna look at it tomorrow its freezing...

fire in your tranny? i didnt know it had stuff to lite up and burn in there...
there is no fire in the tranny.
it's broken.
Ok lol.
Not let the tranny warm up? Thats just pewp...
#1, finish putting yoru crap together so tranny fluid doesn't splash out of your tranny.
#2, get under your car and don't let your brother tell you whats wrong with it. Look at it! Its probably leaking tranny fluid or something that splashed on your exhaust.

that is most likely it -what flip said. the rubber boot on the shift knob (the one underneath the usual one thats inside the car that we see) is damaged on mine and this is what keeps tranny fluid from coming out of the top. everytime i raise my car on a lift, the sides of the tranny are covered in gear oil and it could easily be on the exhaust.

 That's what I'd check first. See if any of the fluid is on your exh. Probably got some on the Cat.

lol.
burning gear oil..
gear oil smells pretty farkin bad to begin with..
check your harness, maybe something shorted and burned.
if there was enough smoke to fill your cabin, i'd check all the wiring and any possible points of leakage.
maybe your clutch pedal wasnt adjusted properly?
i remember my first time doing a clutch swap.. i didnt adjust the pedal and i burnt the clutch until it stopped smoking. smelled awful.

haha you said fark :P
i think the burning was from sprayoff onto the exhaust
ignited a flame perhaps.
its not wiring theres no wires under there except speedsensor wires lol shh i dont have reverse lights :P
but other than that. the grinding is still happening.
im going to drop the tranny and check the fork + tob + clutch + flywheel
cuz the noise is comming from there. i havent fixed that yet *refer to other thread? lol idk where it is now*
but anyways the smoke isnt a concern. i drove it about 50 - 100 miles since then and its fine. hasnt done it since.
but im still looking for the shifter boots

for grinding, try adding an additive or changing out your fluid with mt90.
it helps alot.
if it doesn't, replace :)

yah dude it does
i put el-cheapo oil in there from walmart first
put 200 miles on it then swapped to vavoline i think.
:) it was gross after i changed it.
in ~5k miles ill change fluid again.
or if i pull the tranny i might aswell drain the fluid lol...

so your car got filled with smoke cuz of no shift boots? danng lol.......
i know my car smells like gear oil
but it doesnt fill with smoke that causes you to have to pull over and GTFO of your car cuz you think its going to explode.
