Radio turns on but has no sound

Just bought an S14, the guy told me that the radio cut out a few weeks ago, it turns on and you can scan through the stations, see the time, etc. but just no sound.

Would this be the speakers or the headunit? I was planning on getting a new headunit anyways so I'm hoping that's it.


EDIT: Installed new headunit, I have sound now but it is distorted a bit, and I can't find the amps to byspass them.

It actually kinda sounds like the speakers might just be blown... but I don't know why all of them would be like that. Should I just try new speakers?

Ok, I think I'll put a new headunit in, then if that doesn't fix it I'll check the wires.

If not headunit my money is on the stock amplifiers mounted underneath the rear deck. I had my rear one blow out, then front one. Same issue. No sound but power to everything. Simple bypass wiring.

Sorry but where exactly? And what did you do to fix it? I don't have much experience with electrical issues.

In your trunk, underneath the rear deck lid (between the rear speakers) there is 2 silver boxes. Those are your stock amplifiers. Google "bypassing stock amplifiers on s14" and you should be able to go from there. Follow instructions exactly. You should be able to handle it. You might have to pick up a few supplies, but shouildnt cost more than $5 and take more than 30 minutes.....

Yes, without a doubt bypass the old units.

I have a base model s14 and it didn't have the premium clarion sound system thankfully..going to make my life easier when i wire the rest in, there's some writeups online on how to solder/rewire to bypass the stock amp if you check google.

Yeah, once you bypass them you can tuck the wires away....

Okay, installed new headunit today and I have sound! But it's distorted...

The car doesn't have an amp in it.. your speakers are blown and probably one speaker is blown with a short. Hence the old headunit in protect mode with no sound.

Those are stock speakers in that car..

Replace the speakers and get some nissan speaker harnesses to make your life easier as well.

Yes.. get the 2 way speakers.. as they will sound better. It is the same wiring and you will be okay.

Speaker harnesses can be picked up at Best Buy and such.. alot of people say that you don't need them and what not until I listen to their car and find out that their speakers are all out of phase because they have no idea what they are doing.

If replacing the speakers doesn't work then check your ground. Just reground the headunit to something close and see if that fixes the distortion. If it does, then you know the ground wire from the car harness is not grounding out correctly. I had to do this for one of my s13's. Worth a try and only takes a few minutes.

distorted when u turn up the volume or always? see which speakers sound distorted. as far as I can tell u have the stock clarion one. Deff need to get aftermarket ones haha.Might also be some wiring issue check the connections
