View Full Version : Welded diff installed
Anyone know the best and most solid way to weld a diff? I need to get an open diff welded so I can swap it in place of my v-lsd for a bit...

Well this doesnt help much and welding a diff but i found it kinda informative
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Nissan_240SX_Performance_Modification/Differential#Welding_your_Stock_Differential
That is helpful. Reiterates most of the stuff i've read in forums and such but it's all together...
The thing about welding in a few bolts to the gears to help make a good solid lock is good info...

Pretty good thread on welded diff's...
Some people out there are friggin idiots tho sayin stuff like, "I would never do this its so dangerous and bad..." lol...
So who can weld my diff today? :)

LOL, lets do it in the morning :). Does he have a stick welder? I hear it's best to use that and also to make sure to heat up the metal before you start...

welded diff gets pretty annoying in turns..

Yah, I've ridden in one with a welded dif and it did hop a little but wasn't too bad. Its not my daily driver either so it doesn't really mater that much...

yah, just like the aluminum bushings. Everyone made them out to make hella noise when it's really not that bad at all...
The welded diff is installed! The poping and such is a WHOLE lot less than it was with the v-lsd.
While I was installing it a guy at the shop informed me that sometimes the diff's will get loose and you need to shim them to keep the play out of it. Pretty much it looks like beating the crap out of a diff will loosten it up and then it will require getting a shim kit from nissan to fix the play in it.
I'm going to try to do this to my v-lsd so I can still use it.
In the meantime, the welded diff is pretty fun! I did notice a bit of understeer when trying to initiate a drift tho. Any hints on how to overcome this?

Probly won't happen unless your best friend welds... And even then they probly don't know how to weld it to last for life...
Just cough up the money and go to Turbo Dave...

If it's your daily driver I would probly suggest getting a VLSD. You can pick them up from jarco which is local so you won't have to pay shipping... If you do reallly wana get it welded you'll probly end up paying $50-$80. Keep in mind once you get it welded good it will last longer than the car so the money is worth it to get it done right...

i think the vlsds lock when the fluid reaches a certian temp?..
or is it when it sees a certain amount of force?..
bah i forget...

The fluid locks up when whe wheels are spinning a certain difference in speeds...
My v-lsd isn't locked up, it's just really loose. I plan on shiming it so that it's tight again and using it.
The welded diff isn't that bad, it's a little hoppy on sharp turns but I don't mind it since it's not my daily. Don't think I would mind even if it was my daily...
Give Dave a call up at Mainstream and see what he'll charge. Don't think it'll be much more than $50...

clutch kick. best answer ever to understeer.

Yep. That seems to solve the problem :). I'm trying to find some good corners to try 30 - 40mph drifts...
