View Full Version : Thunk pop twist turn...

Ok, two more problems I think I've narrowed down.

1) When letting out the clutch to go, I get a thunk from the rear when it engages. It doesn't have to be dead stop or anything but it's more noticeable when starting from a dead stop.

I'm thinking this is my v-lsd going/gone bad? I had a friend repeatedly start going at a slow speed so I crawled along with the car and watched the underside and it sounded as if it was coming from the diff... I just changed the fluid in it for good measure. ????

We thought possibly this could be engine/tranny mounts but we're pretty sure the sound is coming from the diff...

2) On acceleration the car likes to steer slightly to the right and when I let off it pulls back to the left...

This should just be alignment.

sounds like lose bolts on both.

All bolts are tight. I checked twice... After I did the bushings, i drove it for a day then went back and re-tightened everything... It was still tight... I didn't check the bolts on the actual diff but its never come out of that subframe and it wasn't moving around at all when i was under it turning the wheels and such...

maybe diff. mounts are worn.

Diff mounts? There are 4 bolts on the back of the diff that connect it to the subframe... I don't know of any mounts tho.

o.. haha sorry got confused between diff and subframe mounts, but didnt you just replace your subframe mounts/bushings?

Ok, its gonna sound silly but I think this has been caused by tire pressure differences. My wheels aren't in the best of shape and don't like to hold 40 psi so they loose air slowly and unevenly. It apparently changes the thrust angle when tire pressures from left to right are different. Makes sense.

i still think you need to change your diff mounts and tire pattern. they are nasty.

o yeah i was thinking about the thrust thing...
is one of your rear shocks blown or one leaking?

Naw, don't think so. Its fine as long as I have equal pressure in rear tires... I can tell when my tire is low now. Rear left leaks slowly.

yup. diff mounts.

Explain. It mounts to the subframe and has the two bolts in the front. Don't see how either could get worn out.

I have a j30 diff and it klunks hard when it engages if I shift hard! I have poly bushings, a stage 4 comp clutch, and subframe spacers. Seems pretty normal.

I've had a vlsd in the car and i know the clunk that you're talking about. Its more of a clunk that you hear than feel. After a while the vlsd started feeling loose and was clunking a lot more than it should have. Same thing happened with the welded diff. It was tight at first, tires would bark around sharp slow turns but after a while it was more than a bark, the whole thing just felt loose.

Tire pressure will do this. Probably one or both of your rear tires is very low in air. This happens, because the diff transfers power to only one wheel, unless they're spinning, so when you gas it you get a lot of flex in the side wall and this causes the 'pulling' feel. When you let of the flex in the side goes to the top of the tire and you experience the opposit feeling (pulling right under acceleration and left during decel).

Noises from under the car with a welded diff, are more than likely coming from the transmission. While turning with a locked diff, places a tremendous strain on the transmissions gears. The gears are essentially pre-loaded against each other and as the wheels change speeds the gears play (with slop) and then they're loaded again. Try pulling the car out of gear without the clutch while you're doing a slow speed u turn, I think it'll make sense then.

Possibly the noise could travel down the drive shaft and sound like its coming from the rear end. but like i said, it's more than likely the tranny
