View Full Version : Broken Key. Need Advice.

Mods: I'm not sure if this is the right section, feel free to move it to where it needs to be.
So yesterday my key snapped in half in my door lock of my 93 240sx. I managed to get the broken half of the key out by removing the door handle. I need to know where I can go to get a copy of a key thats snapped in half.
I tried the dealership, but they said they purge the system of the key ID things after 10 years so they don't have what they need to make a copy. Hardware stores said that the chance of making a copy are very slim and locksmiths want to charge me ~$100 just to come out and also said that they might not be able to copy it.
Any advice would be appreciated. Specially from someone who has been through this and found a way to get a key.
Thanks in advance.

What dealership told you that? Did you try more than one dealership?
I can still get keys for my '93 Preludes at any Honda dealership...Nissan shouldn't be any different.
Worst case though, you may have to buy all new ignition/locks//keys.

happened to me. check your glove box for the key code. if your lucky you'll have one of the few 240's that had it in there. make sure it's the original glove box lol. nissan does not keep key records after 10 years but with your key code they can cut it.
I had a locksmith come to my work and cut me a key. it fits very sketchily, but it starts the car and unlocks the doors. cost me 90 bux.

Yeah, this is what they told me. Sadly, I can't get in the car anymore until I have a new key made so I can't even check the glove box.

This is what nissan told me, which really sucks. My brother was even able to get a key made for his older Acura too. I think its just Nissan that gets rid of the Key ID or codes.
Only tried one dealership so far, which was gwinnet place Nissan. They are the only one with their service department open today that I know of. Everywhere around Kennesaw is closed.

240's are notoriously easy to break in to. Google it.

Yeah I might have too. Just didn't want to be breaking into a car in a apartment complex. Specially when I don't have the title in person.

Yeah Nissan sucks about that, they couldnt cut me a key for my 95 either for the same reason. There is a key code though that should be in your glove box, I think they can use that though? Dont have any spairs at all?

No spairs. :(
So I broke into the car and took apart the entire glove box and no key code. I also checked the passanger's side lock cylinder (didn't know exactly where to look) but I didn't see anything there either.
Any other place it would be?

lesson: make another copy of the key and keep it inside your home for a situation like this.

Should be a stick on the inside of the glove box if its going to be there. That sucks though man, I almost snapped one due to the lock not being lubricated one time. Twisted the shit out of it.

Yeah, it does suck. I ran to the car yesterday because it was raining like hell, put the key in the door lock and turned it really fast, pulled it back out and sat down in the car. Thats when I noticed half of it was missing. Ten seconds later, the rain stopped. I was pretty pissed.
Already checked the glove box with no luck and pulled the entire passenger's side lock cylinder apart and didn't see it there either. Some people on other forums said it would be there, but it wasn't.

I broke into mine with a thin piece of wood with a screw sticking out. Just carefully seperate the window from the frame and angle the wood in so the screw can fit and use the screw to pull the door lock. I did it in like 30sec.

Try every 240 key you can find. There are only a couple of dozen different ones. My GMC truck key starts my 240 but won't open the doors. Weird.

Wish I had some 240 keys laying around. Only key I have is from my old Z32 so I guess I can give that a try...
Going to try to go to Ace or something like that to see if they can do anything tomorrow since I'll actually have a ride. Also going to try the dealership again to see if they have the key code in their national system. Some people with older Nissans have gotten lucky and the dealership actually had the key code.

So good news. I got a copy made from Ace Hardware in Kennesaw and it works. In my attempt to get the key code, I called corporate Nissan and they told me that they have key codes for late 93 model cars and up just for future reference.

Make 3 spares NOW!
Put one in your wallet
Put one in your Dresser Drawer and give one to someone close that can come rescue you.

Lol. I know right. I have a total of 2 keys now. I'm going to the dealership in a day or two to order an OEM blank key and going to get them to make me a copy. That way, I can have a good quality key with 2 replacements!

No title?
On a side note, I think I've met you before? Weren't you the one who asked me if I wanted to sell my white s13 coupe at Kennesaw State near the Clendenin Building a while ago? I was parked in a carpool parking spot.
