i'm posting in this forum because it looks like it gets the most reading action

but my question is what is the difference between an SR20 black top and red top

everyone i talk to say "dude, get the SR20 black top, don't get the red top and you'll own all"

but noone can actually tell me the difference in them, i'm close to actually just getting the red top since noone says get that one.

so is the only difference the valve cover color or does it have completely different internal so the main horsepower boost is located in the lower rpms or the higher rpms?

black top has a black valve cover and the red top has a red valve cover.

what color do you like better?

or you could just paint the valve cover the color you want.

i painted mine too.

problem solved.

There always seems to be confusion as to what a ***8220;black top***8221; SR20DET really is, and what makes it different from the ***8220;red top***8221; SR20DET. Here are a few pointers so you can impress your friends with how much you know about Nissan motors.

First, how to tell the differences between s13 ***8220;red tops***8221;, s13 ***8220;black tops***8221; and s14/s15 ***8220;notch tops***8221; visually:

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub.net/photopost/data/500/2560sr20_Difforences.jpg

Years-
S13 red tops: 91-94
S13 black tops: Late 94-98
S14 notch tops: 95-98
S15 notch tops: 99-01

Alas, the changes/advantages of the s13 Blacktop:*

-Newer
-Usually lower mileage
-Usually about $500 more expensive (because its newer)
-Minor ECU changes 96-98 (interchangeable with all s13 ECU***8217;s)
-Minor wire harness changes
-Larger Oxygen Sensor (still narrow band, no performance gain)

There seems to be a misconception that S13 black tops have Variable Valve Timing and Garrett T28 Turbochargers, this is simply a confusion with the S14 notch top motor (also call black tops by some) and is not true.

If you know of any other differences between the S13 Red Top and S13 Black top, please post here and let me know!

also the s13 BT has cooling fins on the front of the head

Haha mostly. BUT...:toung:

S13 Blacktops are from newer cars. They will generaly have lower miles.

Also, the only mechanical difference is that the black tops have a larger oil pickup opening. Allows more oil to flow through the motor are high RPM's.

s14 blacktops have a ball berring turbo and variable valve timing.

IIRC, the S14's had a T28, but it was not a ball bearing turbo. Pretty sure only the S15's had the GT28RS.

ball bearing.

housing is turbine is mix matched.

either ways, upgrade from a s13 t25.

s15 is a true t28.

I thought the blacktop made a little more power too?

I don't know about SR's much though. 2JZ ftw! lol :toung:

if i recall correctly, s13 redtop and blacktop both factory rated at 205hp. s14 sr rated at 220hp. s15 sr rated at 250.

Of course you'd say 2JZ ftw :(

And yeah, I think its only a few more hp...at least that's what I've been thinking for the last few years :(

Here you guys go. This should answer any questions you have about the specs.

Specifications for RED Top SR20DET

180SX 91-93 and Silvia 91-93

Displacement: 1998cc (2.0 liter)

Cam type: DOHC 16 valve, chain driven cam sprockets

Bore and stroke: 86mm x 86mm

Compression: 8.5 : 1

Horsepower: 205ps at 6000rpm

Torque: 203 ft/lbs at 4000rpm

Stock boost: 7 psi

Throttle body bore: 60mm

Injector size: 370cc/min

Turbo specs:

Compressor: T-25, 60 trim 56mm BCI-1 compressor.

Turbine: T-25, 62 trim 53.8mm 0.64 A/R turbine housing.

Center Section: Journal bearings

Performance:

The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The engine should produce 230-250 RWHP at safe boost.

Specifications for Black Top S14 T28 VTC

Silvia 95-98

Horsepower: 220hp at 6000rpm

Torque: 203 ft/lbs at 4800rpm

Turbo specs:

Compressor: T-28, 60 trim 60 mm BCI-1 compressor in T-04B housing

Turbine: T-25, 62 trim 53.8mm 0.64 A/R turbine housing.

Center Section: Ball Bearing

S14 SR20DET's use a different ECU and harness, these are extremely expensive and hard to find.

Variable valve timing system and a different turbo are the significant changes from the S13 SR20DET engines.

S13 uses 'low port' intake design vs. S14 'high port' design.

Performance:

The stock turbo will be safe to 13-15 psi. After that, the turbo is past its efficiency range, and power increases will fall off and are not worth the risk of turbo damage. The stock engine should produce 250-260 RWHP at safe boost using stock turbo. Upgrading turbo, fuel and rest of need parts will yield 300-375.

Specifications S15 Black Top SR20DET

S15 Silvia 99-

Horsepower: 250ps at 6000rpm

Transmission: 6 Speed, Close Ratio

Injector size: 480cc/min

Turbo specs:

Compressor: T-28, 60 trim 60 mm BCI-1 compressor in T-04B housing

Turbine: Inconel turbine wheel. Cast divider wall between turbine discharge and wastegate.

Center Section: Ball Bearing

This engine is expensive and hard to get. If you are on a tight budget, please consider other options as the money you save from buying this engine can be better used to build up a really nice Red Top.

Additions: 6 speed manual transmission. The 6 speed cannot be used on the S13 and S14 motors, and uses a different driveshaft. Speed sensor is located in the differential. The 6 speed is cool, but is not as strong as the 5 speed from the older cars. There is basically 6 gears inside the same housing that was designed to hold 5 gears. This makes the gears smaller and weaker, therby breaking more often.

Then its not a redtop. Simply a Red valve cover.
