View Full Version : AP1 vs. Z33 vs. WRX

Well,
I'm contemplating trading my Hyundai XG350L in for either of those three..
Main reason would be because the XG is just too big of a car for myself to ride around dd.
WRX would probably be just as big and WRX was like the third leg, I just picked it because it was in my price range.
I'm looking for something around ~$18,000 range and the three fit it.
What do everyone feel about the above cars?
Mainly would be AP1 (S2000) vs Z33 (350Z).
I'd love to hear some un-biased information.
I'm leaning towards the AP1 as it's a more sporty car (imo) and not everyone and their mothers have it. I know it's a pretty shallow decision, and my decision will probably be determined for 100% after I drive both cars @ the dealership.
I know Dangeruss has an AP1 and referred me to S2ki.com site and I've been lurking around there already. I read up on several tech articles and such, but none on the Z33.
Discuss!

i saw some hot version video (i think) a couple weeks ago with a slightly modified s2k vs a s or r tune z33 and i was thinking theres no way that big ass z33 can keep up with that little car but the z33 won b/c the s2k didnt make enough torque.
i'd say z33

I like WRX because it can seat 4 (or 5), AWD, and it whine.

sorry, this will be daily.
No major mods.
I have my S13 for modding.
strictly daily.
most i'll probably do for this would be add-on aero and wheels.

i'd get the z33 but if its going to be a daily drive i'd get something you have no intention of modifying. i'd get a prius or some hybrid car. good luck

The VQ35DE has very weak internals for boosting anyway. If you want to run over 7psi, you need to get new internals. 350Z is more comfortable though, especially for long trips. S2000 has a bit rougher ride and is a snug fit. I don't recommend anyone over 6,1 to buy an S2000. 350Z you see everywhere. That's the main reason I don't like it over the S2000. Both have great tuning potential if you go that way in the future. S2000 does not like anything below 2500-3000rpm. Whole car shakes.

My brother just recently made this same decision. He went s2k and loves the shit out of his car. I think its an amazing DD (i spent a week down there and borrowed his car everyday), but i guess it depends on what you want out of ur DD. s2k is so small inside, tiny ass trunk, no torque, stiff suspension makes it a little less comfortable, like zero range on a tank of gas. Not that the z is incredibly different, but i think its a little more modest... less of a track car i guess.... so considering that you want a DD and not a track car. Z all the way

My bro has a daily AP2 and I myself have sn SR S13. I find that the S2K is sporty but has its cons. The interior is VERY small and cargo room is pretty shitty. I'm a Nissan guy so I would sway towards the Z33. As far as performance the S2K has virtually no torque and suspension is too grippy for me. The powerband is pretty linear and the steering is quite sharp. The engine is potent as is and modifications can be extremely expensive. Both cars are good choices as a daily driver and would get looks all oever the place but I think the z33 would be a better choice, plus can't beat that exhaust note.

Hm..
I'm really wondering if the S2000 is really as bad as its getting reviews of.
Question though..
if the top is down on the S2000, is the trunk full?
or where does the top retract into??

The AP1 and AP2 S2000 feel like completely different vehicles. AP1 is more of a pure sports car that the AP2. AP2 has a softer suspension, lighter clutch, and more torque with the sacrifice of 700rpm. It has only like ten more foot pounds, but you can definitely feel the difference. 1999-2001 were basically the same car: plastic window, carpet center console, tweeter placement and stereo, and so on. They changed the suspension geometry a little also. 2002-2003 also about the same. Glass window, leather center console, tweeter placement and stereo, and chrome rings around the rear headlights. Difference is the ECU flash is better on the 2003. 2004-2005 was a big change for the S2000. Se to be more comfortable so they could increase sales. Leather reworked and revised interior, new aero design, headlight/taillight reworked, suspension changed(helped decrease the sudden oversteer) New engine F22C, new wheels, tweeter position and stereo, gear ratio changed(1st-4th shorter and 5th-6th longer), etc. 2006-> has drive by wire, temperature gauge, reworked interior, stereo, and some more stuff. Traction control was introduce around 2005-2006 also. I know I'm missing many things, but I'm tired. Hope this helps. Oh, and I averaged about 300 miles on a tank by the way. Tank=13.3 gallons;)

No, the top doesn't go into the trunk. Trunk space isn't too bad for the size of the vehicle though. It's pretty deep, just not long because of the spare. The top retracts to right behind the driver and passenger behind the roll hoops. One of the fastest retracting tops in existence too. You just feel so alive in the car. It's the most fun car I have ever driven, and I have driven a lot of cars. That's why I picked the S2000.

^wow I need to rep you again for that chronological information on the AP1.
I'm assuming F22 and F20.. they increased size for tq?
I've heard mixed reviews so far, but more information on the S2000 than the Z33, which everyone "likes" but has no definite good info on.
I'll test drive my friend's base Z33 and see how I like it.. then off to the stealership. I am looking to get somewhere around 01-03 model, however from what Dangeruss said, I'd be better off with the 02-03 model. Dont want no plastic windows (back window?).

Ive driven both and liked the 350Z best.
s2k- I drove both models of the s2k (new and old) and they were fun and all but too small and the engine didnt impress me in the low end. On the up side they are easy as hell to work on if you ever have to (it is a honda). I didnt like the shifter feel all that much. Handled awesome though.
350z- I loved everything about it. It was comfy as hell, you dont feel like your going to get claustrophobic in it. The interior is way cool. Motor felt like a stock sr w/ a more torque, Broke the tires lose just switching to second ;). Handles awesome, maybe not as good as the stock s2k but who cares if its just a daily. Plus you can upgrade sus. shit later if you really need to haha. If you like 240's you will love this car.
that was my .02 cents
http://www.ziptied.com/Coppermine/albums/userpics/11278/DSC_0217_%28Large%29.JPG = my vote!
*edit* I drove a couple WRX's as well and they are a whole different ball game! Felt like a fcuking sling shot haha. It was awesome but they look pretty boring stock and suck to maintain from what friends have said. Turbo car as a daily sucks is the word on the street.

my evo was destroyed by a drunk.
18k-24k. same budget.
35k-42k same budget.
go to the dealership. they will make it work for you. gonna spend the money anyways, might as well, spend it on something you would enjoy.
three cars you gave us shows you have no idea of what you want. they all drive totally different. so, we show you the path of greatness......
and monthly payments, unless you are italian asian, we pay cash.
but besides the point. here we see wants vs needs.
and all those three cars we see here are wants.
so just pick one and bitch later.

Base on your test drive, you seem to like 350 better. No matter what, still a good choice.
Just not the best one ;)

For me, i would choose the 350z, simply because an s2000 is to small for me to daily.

F22C is just a stroked version of the F20. That's why they cut down the revs. There is really no difference between the two besides that fact. And when they let you test drive it, ask them if you can open it up somewhere. If not, go to another dealer.

I like my S2000, it is faster than a 350z on a small tight track, but the 350 is faster on a HP track like road atlanta. The top retracts in to it's on little cargo boot, does not go into the trunk. Here is my S200 for sale if you are interested you can drive it. pm me

deffff.
I learned a few things from s2ki..
s2 owners seem to be more 'mature' than the 350z owners..
main reason in me choosing s2k.
i love nissan and everything,
but when it boils down.. z33 owners had their heads up their asses.
anyways.. nothing will go down until i clean up the driveway and backyard of the cars, so 10x speed on the 240!
