Idk if this is the right place for this but want to know what everyone thinks about this........

So, I took my gf's car up to jiffy lube to get emissions. (don't use them for anything else, but they give the cheapest emissions.) Its an 89 Honda accord with low miles and runs great on an every day basis, never had a problem with it over heating or anything. Anyways, I turn the car over to the tech and go in and sit down, while watching him thru the window I start to notice the the car begin to smoke some, so while I wait for the tech to notice it and tell me he just continues to do the test and ignores it. He then walks right up to the car right in front of the smoke and places a fan in front, (he had to have seen it or atleast smelt it!) Despite the obvious smoke, he gets in the car and proceeds to do the 35mph-55mph test or w/e it is. This kinda irritated me so I walk outside and look at the temp gauge over his shoulder and it was as far hot as it could possibly go and the car was smoking even more at this point. I immediately bring this to his attention and he is completly oblivious to it. When he turns the car off a HUGE cloud of smoke comes out from around the car. After the smoke ceased, we found there had been 3in hole blown out of the top of the radiator. The tech then came to me and said oh sorry theres nothing we can do about it not our problem, this really didn't make me happy so I had a chat with the manager and he made me fill out a bunch of paperwork and said it had to be sent through corporate and I couldn't leave the car there.

Is it wrong for me to expect them to for pay all or part of the problem being that I brought them a perfectly running car???

umm...

did he break the radiator?

That is just wrong, if the car is starting to over heat you turn it off... Some older cars dont respond well to those emission test because the car is working hard while sitting still so it isnt getting the same amount of air flow as it is used to.

I think they should atleast pay for the raditor or the labor to install a new one.

He did smash it with his hands, but if he would have been paying attention and not on the phone with his wife talking about dinner it probably wouldn't have busted......atleast then

THank you duke!!

you also have to consider that alot of things break radiators.

maybe your radiator cap was stuck, and when he put it on the dyno with not much air flow it exploded. which in this case, you would be at fault.

how does overheating blow a 3" hole in the radiator? I would think multiple things would fail before that...

not true, if the radiator is the original one, it probably has weakened over time.

ask royal lemon on here, he had one blow. its very common.

the radiator hoses are made pretty strong, they can hold lots of psi. but the radiator cap regulates the pressure inside your coolant system. so when your engine heats up. pressure rises and if the cap doesnt open. something pops.

This is true, but I had been driving the car for a while, today and it was completly fine, so yes it is quite possibly a coincidence, my biggest problem was that the car was obviously smoking before he began the pull, why did he not stop then and why did he not notice that the car was overheating??

The cap seemed fine, idk if there is actually a way to check it but the spring looks completly normal.

I would think so to, but I've seen this happen before.

The same way a bypass hose can blow, Thermostat locks up and builds pressure and it splits

Damn man. I won't lie I'm the service manager of one, and I have idiots like that at my store. And have worked with even worse ones at others. If they give you the run around about any of it just let me know what store you were at and I can get you the number to the district manager for that store. In which case you can piss him off til he pays you money lol. Because I know they more than likely did not give you that, just the usual 1-800 bullshit and the incident report.

honestly, that sucks. i can tell you in, in my experience, alot of customers want to have their shit tested anyways. alot of them don't care that its running fucked up. they just want to drive it regardless.

How does it feel to be in your phone? I bet it's kinda cramped in there.
