View Full Version : Idea for theft deterent

So I had a guy tell me he could steal my 240. I was like BS, so he showed me. It sucks how easy it is to crank a Honda or Nissan without a key. Anyway, without going into details on that, I figured my alarm system wasn't enough. So, I have decided to install a switch between my fuel pump fuse and the fuel pump. Whenever I get out of the car, I'm going to cut off the switch. That way, if you don't switch it back on, you can crank it up, and only drive as far as the fuel that is in the line will take you (about 10 seconds). I think this is a good idea. Anyone have any disputes or comments on this as a security measure?

theres no single thing you can do to prevent a thief from getting into or getting your car. best protect is LAYERS.
more layers, the better. slows them down.

Where's a good location to put that switch? Obviously in line with the 12V circuit that powers the pump, but where would it be an inconspicuous piece of hardware?

Great idea until you get sick and tired of resetting your clock and radio settings.

There are many many many ways to prevent a car from being stolen. All you have to do is understand how everything works, because then you know how to make them NOT work.

Dude, most imports are the easiest cars to start without a key.

Give me a screwdriver and a hammer, and Im almost positive I could have any Civic driving in under 90 seconds.

Fuel pump cutoff is one of the most popular ways for a theft deterrent.
I personally like the idea of having not only a FP cutoff, but also one that kills the starter, and one for the distributor.

And layering is the key.

I'd truthfully feel more secure spending about $25 on switches and wire and making my own cutoffs than an alarm. I'm not sure if you guys realize how easy it is to kill an alarm that was installed like normal.

Hell, I pulled the alarm out of my GSR in about 5 minutes, wiring, speaker, brain and all.

I know alot of Honda folks will just pull their main relay, haha.

True, but after reading through Honda tech, I realized alot of theives out there bring ECU's with them.

Not to mention knowing my luck Id bent a pin on an ecu unplugging it and plugging it in everyday.

Id just rather mount a bunch of hidden switches, personally.

Or do a magnetic switch.

starter switch can be bypassed.
the most basic way would be a screw driver, if you can get to it.
i like the idea of a switch on the distributor.

steal the intellikey system out of an inifinity. youl be able to have push start.
Wiring wise ithink just have a good ignition cut to an alarm would be more then adequate if you dont do everything perfect more then you igntion switch would have trouble .installed properly, alarms are a good deterrent , but as a preventative measure alrms are essentialy null. besides , whole car theft is whats in now anyway. insurance is always the best way to go and not putting ourself in a theft situation is your best prventative measure. this comes from installing alarms mself that experienced techs and thieves have issues even figuring out where any of the components are let alone bothering to disable it and bypass any kill fetures I have strewn through out th car.

I wanna set my shit up like Resident Evil.

Ya know, like, you have to find the red diamond in the trunk, place it in the statue in the glove box, and when the statue tips over, you wait for a knock, then you hit the switch that turns the lights on, flash them to trigger the other switch.

Watch out with fuel cut switches, if they short out and you lose fuel it can hurt things. Cutting power to the ignitor/dizzy is a better way to go.

The best security for a 240SX:

Visible rust
Mismatched/Bad paint/Broken bumpers
Stock wheels w/ 4 lug conversion
Stock ride height
Stock KA and stock exhaust
Cracked windshield
Messy interior/Stock Radio

Layering people... it's very important.

For all of you driving S13s, if you change out your seatbelts to s14 seatbelts or any other non auto seatbelts, you have a few places to hide stuff. Above the window, and along the door on the bottom under the carpet. Easy place to put an alarm brain as well as a switch. Just figured I'd put that out.

Yeah... I'm about to add the full $4000 or $5000 added coverage to my insurance (the most Progressive allows) which should make my car worth about 9K. It has more than that in it but it's not like I can tell them I have a Skyline engine :)

---------- Post added at 08:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:35 PM ----------

I've gone through total theft - it sucks. During the January 05 ice storm (who remembers that?) I got into an accident on 285. I had a black 2000 Civic Si with Volk TE37's, Koni shocks, Eibach springs, just put in a new ACT clutch kit and Dunlop SP9000's...

The body shop that fixed my car also stole it. They copied my key and found my address on my registration card (I should have known - all my paperwork and CD's were out of order when I got the car back) and came two weeks after I got my car back and just drove it off like it was theirs.

I only got an extra 1000 for the performance parts (they were being nice) and they gave me 'market value' for my car, not the KBB (my car was in EXCELLENT condition - the thing was mint).

Getting a car stolen sucks, and I hope people that steal cars die of colon cancer.

I just wired mine in today. I put a false switch in plain sight, that does nothing, and hid the real switch. I've even got wires running to ground on the fake switch, so that if they wanted to try and trace it down, it would lead them to nothing. Easy money...I don't think so. I'll post pictures tomorrow. After I take them. But I'm not giving away the location of the real switch.

I agree with whom ever is concerned about a tow truck. My answer to that, are hills, to prevent wheel dollies, and positioning the car in a way that a truck can't easily back up to it. Think about it, If they cannot situate themselves quick enough to tow it, then its not going to happen; at least that way. I use a quick release but I turn the wheel over to the farthest lock, once the car is off and PS pressure is gone, then remove the wheel. Without the leverage of the wheel, there is an immense amount of pressure on the key mechanism. I'm not saying that is full proof, but in layers with other "obstacles" it gives an extra bonus to just removing your steering wheel.

Quick-Release wheel is the most popular, but the Fuel Pump switch is a pretty good idea, but it'd be a pain. You forget to turn it back on, and then you'll be driving for 10 seconds. A QR wheel you couldn't forget about.

Never more than 100' away from my vert, alarm w/ pager, Glock 27 "carry gun" 9 hydroshock's and b.u. 15 rd mag, AR-15 w/ADT is home alarm...... My wife carries a .40 and my 10 year old shoots JR IDPA...lol All BS aside I just won't park my car ANYWHERE if I can't see it or get to it in a few steps, I'll drive till i find a place or come back later, gives me a reason to drive more....If you can see my vert I can see you!,,, My view just has crosshairs....

Did you go back to that shop to cut their vocal cords off?
This thread has me scared to even leave my car alone now, i locked me keys in the car the other day and it took me less than a min. to unlock the door with a hanger.

Please dont do fuel cutoffs, its a great way to kill your motor. Do an ignition cutoff instead.

relay the 12v acc to a c4 detonator with some c4. the switch isn't turned off and BOOM!

Just always, always remember to turn it off.

anybody with a steering wheel club...i hope you realize steering wheels are flimsy and designed to break in case your skull should contact it in an accident. any thief with a hack saw could have a club out of the way in about fifteen seconds or less.

i think somebody linked it earlier, but the club that attaches to your break pedal seems like the safest and easiest bet to me. it puts potential thieves in an awkward position trying to get to it and it's virtually indestructible from what i've read.

I dunno about everyone else, but my alarm is physically spliced into my starter wire. You can pull out the alarm and wiring (if you can find it under the dash), but you're still not getting that b!tch started with the starter solenoid wire cut in half. Fuel pump cutout is a good idea, though. Even better if it's hidden.

there was a kid in new mexico that drove an el camino. he heard about people stealing older cars and driving them across the boarder to mexico. so he wired a switch under his seat that connected his distributor to wires placed in his driver seat. if u didnt flick the switch you would recieve all the voltage from the distributor. sad to say a guy tried to steal his car and it killed him. the kid faced charges of a booby trap and murder but im pretty sure he got out of it.

That El Camino story sounds like BS. Unless the dude had someone else hotwiring the starter why would he keep cranking it while being electrocuted?

its true, just cause a car may look like a beater, it doesn't necessarily mean they won't steal it. my cousins little civic was stolen about a week ago by pleasant hill in Lilburn and it sure wasn't that pretty. all they stole were the 16" aftermarket rims and a Sony head unit. what I find retarded is that you still got to pay the wrecker service for keeping and towing the car when they find it. she had to pay over $200 just to get her STOLEN car back...:screwy:

oh and they also stole "one" wheel off of my uncle's car. just one! and he lives in a community!

The bast theft deterrent is a stock 240 with some of them randomly placed Pep Boys flames on the doors. Nobody wants that carp.

I have a flamethrower kit too when you touch the door and you aren't the owner of the car it will instantly set you on fire.
