i think i know what the problem is.... your overexposure problem.
theres alot of things that could cause it. honestly your lens isnt made to take shots in the dark.
your lens *and mine* is an f3.5 - 5.6 meaning according to how much you zoom it adjusts the fstop
at 55mm it is 5.6 and at 18 it is 3.5
also
the iso of the camera can be accessed by pushing the up arrow button any time you arent in a menu.
hit this button and if youre shooting indoors youre gonna need to be on 800 or 1600 with your lens.
secondly, invest in the 50mm f1.8 lens =D 75 bucks
or the f1.6 its 250 bucks this one is built way better.
unfortunately these dont zoom. its a standard lens.
also, dont shoot in M mode... i know you like it... i like it too.
but it measures the exposure by the blinking bar on the outer screen. so if you adjust whiel youre pointed down.. it will be different when you shoot. but shoot in P or AV that way you can litterally point and shoot.

Just the opposite. You want your ISO higher to catch more light in dark situations and in light situations you want it as low as you can get it for better quality shots. You will get lots of noise shooting in 1600 so try to shoot in 200-400 most of the time if possible... That might help fix your overexposure issue as well.

Find out what fstop it is... Thats what determines how much light goes in. You shouldn't have any problems with that lense. User error :P.

while it zooms it raises up
at around 25 it moves up to the next fstop level
then around 35 the next one

honestly that lens is just way to high of an fstop to be shooting in the dark essentially
1600 is the fastest "film" iso setting
then 100 is the slowest our cameras offer

the f-stop is 3.5 at 18mm
while it zooms it raises up
at around 25 it moves up to the next fstop level
then around 35 the next one

honestly that lens is just way to high of an fstop to be shooting in the dark essentially
1600 is the fastest "film" iso setting
then 100 is the slowest our cameras offer

btw film and digital iso's are completely different meanings.
