Jorgen

My estimate is at roughly 1.5X the cost of an SR swap (if you have a shop do it), you could rebuilt and turbo your KA. Leaving you with a rebuilt, bigger and better motor.
Memme
01-09-2009, 04:05 PM
I would estimate lower... and not rebuild it. Wewt!
If someone had a properly built KA-T and an SR20DET sitting on a pallet side by side and said "Choose one"... I would pick the KA-T every time.
I'm going to throw in a cliche just to piss SR people off...
"No replacement for displacement."
Hahah...
But hey... this is in the right area... DRAMA FTW!
My new slogan... "KA24DE: Well mine's bigger, so there."

what makes it better?

based on a set number of variable, wants, need, and perimeters.... then you can gauge.

Stock Head gasket/ stock bolts.
740cc injectors
Walboro 255 fuel pump.
BC stage 2 cams 264, 12.05 lift
Megan turbo manifold

thats his old setup and he made 381whp at 17psi his new setup makes 430 and when it was at 28psi he said it should be making around 500
500 hp is a whole other game....i think most people usually want to stay around 250-300whp....which a ka-t can get very cheaply lol

3 years is nothing... if you said you've been drifting since 1903, then you'd be an OG with street cred... but 3 years ago Drifting was ripe with fanboys.
But then I have relatively little respect for USDM drifting as a "motorsport"... so my opinion on the subject, you may not like. :goodjob:
I thought everyone knew that already.
If fact, the assumption that anyone who owns a 240SX is into SR20's and Drifting got really OLD after 5+ years of owning this car... I never cared that it is the number one car of drifting. I like it because it looks nice, and it's a Nissan with a timing chain motor.
Call it a backlash. :graypirate:
It makes you a fanboy of drifting... you're male... you're a fan.
In my case... I'm a Haterboy. You have your fans, and your haters. I hate. That's what I do.

there really is no set "judging standard" for drifting
its just judge favorites, etc etc
thats the nice thing about grip

they also just peice together a kit on a old ass, burning oil KA that has been beat on for years..
It's not burning oil! :eeek:
It's leaking like a MOFO... but that will be fixed.
Doesn't have time to burn it before it leaks out.
But last time I checked it was really clean inside, and compression was good.
this is the other problem
there really is no set "judging standard" for drifting
its just judge favorites, etc etc
thats the nice thing about grip

ka24de+turbo = ka24de-t (not ka24det. you have to add the dash) jk
i like both, but i went with sr since its easier and prooven to be an easier motor to make reliable power in.
How is it easier...a KA is already in your 240 when you buy it...And it makes power quite reliably. All thats been "proven" is that more people have been tuning SR's for longer..not that its easier

They're both good for what they're made to do.

Ok well lets break it down.
SR20
Step one- Search Internets for engine
Step 2- Buy SR20 from JHOT or Jarco or second hand source.
Step 3- Roll the dice on wether your engine is a JDM surprise cassarole with issues, Ive seen a lot of SR's COME totally shitty or break MISC components..so thats something to factor in as having to fix. I mean you ARE buying a "used" motor at the end of the day.
Step 4 - If its ok, Spend more money to put it in your car and make around 180-190 WHEEL hp. (or put the engine in your self and wire it up)
Step 5 - Tune the shit to make more HP because my KA-T with the same turbo will stomp it if I get around to it, Its just a fact, beef up the SR.
Estimated Cost/cost of time? 2k +
KA-T
step 1 - Oh shit dudes, I already have a KA in my car. Does it run good? Smoke? good compression? wliminate steps 1 2 AND 3 from sr right there.
Step 2 - Slap on turbo parts and fuel and drill your return line or if you want EASY by an adapter for your oil filter that gives you an external plug in.
Step 3 - Slap a tried and true tune in the car
Step 4 - Drive and go with more power/torque than the SR that cost 2k
Estimated cost and labor time for j00?? 900-1500$

Theres a point to this. "easy" is subjective and ALSO some people get lucky with their motors, and unlucky with others. It may have been easier for YOU, but without a lot of data dealing with both in different configurations..initial conditions etc..hook ups with parts or engines w/e you cant say something is generally "easier"
There are plenty of examples of easy KA-T builds that run well. Plenty of examples of SR swaps being easy that run well, Even plenty of examples of SR swaps going horribly wrong AND ka-t's going horribly wrong. It doesn't prove anything, I think arguing about what engine is better really is stupid. It just matters what YOU like.

thats a great break down, but i believe your price for a KA-T is wrong.
I got a T25 and manifold for about $200, low miles.
Oil adapter and lines, maybe $100
Fuel pump, $100
USED SR injectors, $100, New injectors $300-$500.
Intercooler piping and BOV, $250.
Exhaust: Downpipe is $100. High flow Cat (if you want one, and I do) $100.
Rest, maybe another $100 to $200.
Apexi Neo, or other SAFC, roughly $200. $300 installed, $50 for tuning
Boost guage, $50
I'd feel better with more guages, (oil temp, psi, water temp, ect.) $100
Boost controller, $20 to $200 (I like the AEM guage controller)
Wideband (optional) $200 (with guage)
Clutch upgrade - $250 installed, $200 to $600 for parts
am I missing anything?
I'd say more like $2k - $3k

Im not talking about Blah Blah HP..just like 250 wheel. Which is superior to a stock SR for less of a price. I wouldn't push higher than 250 with a stock motor. Oh..and if you stay off the rev limiter Im sure it will run as reliably as your Used SR20.

Not entirely..Revs are the biggest killer of KA's . The engine AND turbo efficiency with a T-25 drop off at pretty much the same spot..around 6500 ish and with the turbo being so spool happy on a 2.4 liter you will definitely stay in boost ^_^, and with the torque the KA makes theres not too much reason to push red line.

I never said I didint like revs, The KA doesnt. Ive grown rather fond of torque. IMO.. SR>KA but only to the point where the stock internals are at its limits with the KA.
but if we were talking about building both engines i would choose KA because at that point the fact that the SR can hold more power with stock internals is irrelevant. Since both motors would be built. Theoretically meaning they could handle the same power but still have the benefit of the torque the KA has over the SR.

This is me in the 1/8th at Eatonton. The track is slick as balls. First run I didn't warm up the tires and I spun the 1st-3rd with 18x9"s

MPH: 79.79

No traction.
They closed down that track because some guy spun out from no traction in a highly modded drag car a few weeks ago and got his legs cut off...now he's dead. That track is almost as bad as trying to launch in rain. Seriously.

You say track prep at Eatonton was the issue, yet you were running on 18's...
See where this is headed? And if you're on street tires, you don't really warm them up. You just spin them for a split second to clean them off. Doing a Duke Nukem burnout on street tires will only make things worse.
FWIW, I cut a 2.1 60' and made the same MPH with lower E/T at Twiggs with 4 year old 255/40/17 tires that were almost to the cord, not to mention the retardedly stiff coilovers I have on the car.

Dude, thats like apples to oranges........ A N/A SR would not run 8.2s. I wanna see some people who have a turbo KA and know how to drag race post some times up. Then you can talk......
I am really considering a turbo with a KA just to for once and for all shut up everybody who thinks the SR is such a dominate motor.

i'm goin to assume its a drag racing term
AFSil80
01-11-2009, 04:07 AM
'Cutting a decent light' refers to how fast you get the car moving when the green light hits.
Due to slow human reaction, on a sportsman tree, when the third yellow light comes on, you launch because by the time your brain says go, the green light is on.
Pro tree is a bit more difficult... ;)

Ok link, the reality is that at most tracks you never really hot lap..... What I used to for some of my cars was pull the a/c relay fuse and hit the a/c button. This kicks on both fans and helps cool the engine. I was data logging my SR and the fans did not come on until around 200 F.......with the fans on, they stayed at 185 F.
Also, for a N/A limited mod motor, you can hot lap all day, especially at night! While waiting 30 minutes might seem ok, just try to get back in line after cooling off for that long!

I will add to the tips......
1) Show up when the gates first open, you wanna get thru tech if they have it and get on the track as soon as they let you; as the night goes on the line gets longer and longer (most tracks you can get a lot of runs early on and for newbs, you can make runs without embarrassing yourself in front of people)
2) Get a copy of tech rules before you go
3) If you have never been to a drag race before, go once just to watch or at least watch a few passes to see how its done
4) If at all possible, do not run against a 11 second or faster car, not only do they destroy your morale, it also is very difficult to concentrate on a launch with your car vibrating violently from their engine!
5) Show up with about a half of tank of gas......do not run under a 1/4 of a tank, you may run into fuel starvation problems; unless you are going for some kind of record or something.
6) Have a friend come with you; he can store all the extra stuff like spare tire, jack, etc in their car; plus tools! Also, bring a few wrenches along!
7) Bring an air pump and a good gauge. Most tires hook up better with lower pressures. Some tracks do not have air, so its best to always bring your own!
8) Try different launch techniques.....N/A cars with heavy flywheels typically like dumps, while turbo cars usually like a bit slipping.
Also, do not worry too much about your reaction time when you first start racing, I would be more concerned with launches; unless you entered a bracket race! lol

Yes, 18"s. I had no form of camber adjustment, just dropped as low as I could. Super negative camber...The next day, I looked at the tires and it was obvious that I was only using the inner 1/2. Not to mention the tires were pretty worn out already AND had a high tread wear. A terrible thing, obviously.
My burnout wasn't anything crazy. About 3 seconds of tirespin.
Mustangs GT's and non supercharged Cobras have never been a problem for me.

I thought the rear camber was somewhat adjustable? Why do you have 18s for drag racing? Bigger is not always better!
lol I would beg to differ, 2.5 60 foots are abysmal at best! My bone stock 17.7 quarter mile Hardbody was pulling better 60 foots than that!
Every motor has potential with enough $$$$$$$$

It is, but no where near enough to compensate for what it was once I lowered the car. I had 18"s on there because I didn't want to mess up my daily's. I would never ever use those for "drag" wheels/tires.
I never bragged about my 60' times. I know they were shit due to all the crap I listed. Which aren't excuses...it's the truth.
I had fun to say the least. I pwned 350z's, S2000's, Mustangs...the list goes on and on. I enjoyed myself and can't wait to get my S13 boosted. Like I said, it will happen soon enough.
