i am changing my rear pads and rotors and i'm trying to compress the rear piston and the brake tool won't fit in between the piston and the inside of the caliper making me unable to compress the piston.

ideas?

pics up in a few.

Do not try to push in that piston. It actually twists in (it has four little dimples around the edge of the piston, right?). I have the special tool set for it. I think I've heard of people trying to just twist it in with a couple of screwdrivers.

yeah, i know you have to twist it in, i just cant fit the brake tool that fits in the notches because the piston is too far out.

I don't know what kind of tool you have, but mine will spin all the way flush with the plate. So that is not a problem... Maybe try spinning it in with a screwdriver or two...

If you can't grab it with something and spin it or use something to push at the dimples to spin it, get a new tool... Did you press the pedal with no pad in there or something? That looks pretty far. My style tool may fit. I've never had an issue with it.

Now that I think about it. You had to have pushed the pedal down with no pads in there because there is no way you could fit a rotor and even two backing plates with no pad left in there!

How about putting some needle nose pliers in the 'dimples' and twisting! If you can't twist by hand put a screwdriver in between the pliers and pull for more leverage.

i figured out how to do it. i did the screwdriver thing except with a wrench. what happens if you DO push in the piston?

Use needle nose pliers and manually twist it down first.

scoob.

You will damage the rear caliper that way. The rears twist down.

is it okay to push in the front pistons?

Hey brent.
You need to slide out the outside part of the caliper to let the tool spin.

Yeah, you're supposed to. :D

How the hell did you get it to shoot out that far?

there wasn't a rear pad back there.

all the brakes were worn to poo-town.

Shit the bed.

Use some channel locks around the piston, turn with that til you can fit the cube, then rock and roll.

wtf???? So the piston would just drag the rotor?

the outside pad was missing, not the inside one, so the caliper did.

the rotor is so fucked up. lol

i fixed everything though so its all good.

I've had the same issue with that tool as well. Be careful not to get it wedged in trying to make it work. If it's that far out, you may have hit the brakes while it was off and really screwed up the caliper. If it's still fine though, I would suggest just trying to spin it with something else.

When it works though, the tool above is fucking king compared to the cube. Rent it and never return it if you can't find one... They're only like 35 bucks. No tax if you do it the rental way... ;) (not really sure how much they'd cost to buy though... Maybe less)

This is what I do. That box tool is a joke, I hate those things.

i've got to change out my rear pads also, but i use a big ass pair of pliers to twist the calipers back in.
