I'm interested in getting a 7" touch screen for my Subie. I've heard of a few people finding them for a little over $300 which is an awesome price. I don't want to slack off on quality too much so I was wondering if anyone had suggestions or input.

Something like:
http://cgi.ebay.com/JVC-KW-AVX800-7-Touchscreen-DIVX-2-Din-DVD-MP3-player_W0QQitemZ280126936743QQihZ018QQcategoryZ328 25QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
^ but this one is 500+

I don't want to slack on sound quality or power. Nor adjustability of levels and such.

like the old saying goes.. u get what u pay for. honestly i try to follow that route because with something your going to use day after day after day u want it to hold up, u go out on cheaper things and its prone to die sooner. just my .02 tho :)

I have the pioneer AVIC-D1 in my S14. It's a double din navi. system and touch screen. I really like it, but sometimes the touchscreen doesn't work right. Like you have to push the screen a few times before it picks it up. I got it for $500 back in January, but that's because it was old. They just came out with the AVIC-D3 and it's awesome, and much cheaper. The AVIC-D1 was like over a thousand new.
Here's a picture of mine:

duals are awful... just my .02, but i used to work at best buy and we never had a single good thing to say about them- customers never enjoyed them, tons of broken ones- etc. But the AVIC's by pioneer are great systems, the D1 is awesome but it didn't play dvd's or anything- the D3 fixes all that, plays dvd's burnt dvd's, mp3, anything you throw at it. and all for a G. Find someone that works at best buy now and you can get it at cost... about $630 i believe. Alpine was coming out with one also that was only going to be about $400 and didn't have the navi- I haven't kept up to date but I bet it's probably on the market. I used to be big into car audio- the old volvo won a few competitions in the sub area, but now i'm out of all that.

I don't like the pop out ones. I want it to sit flush.

Why do you think the motors die so much? I would think that the more quality ones would be ok.

I used to work at best buy as well. I didn't see too many of them come back. I worked at the tech bench so I saw everything that came back over the course of about 2 years...

I have the opportunity to buy something like this:

http://www.techepics.com/files/carputer_1.jpg

I would have to build a small computer and figure out how to work the sound in the car and where to mount the cd drive etc.. It would be a lot of work but would be nice. Just not sure If i want to go through with all that trouble. It would however be nice to have wireless installed so wherever I go that has wireless I could hop on in the car.

www.newegg.com sells mini-itx motherboards
you can google car 12v powersupplys for the itx boards. and then theres no need for a power inverter.
get a laptop serial ata harddrive and make sure your mobo has sata duh.
then u have a computer thats no bigger than a stack of like 8 cd cases. make a tiny box for it and be sure to have propor insulation. and shabam.
most of these itx boards have decent video cards in them to run multimedia aps. soo no worries. and they sell wireless keyboard / mouse combos you could have in there for the passanger =D this is what i plan on doing eventually
i want an 8 inch screen tho.
and you will still need to keep your factory stereo. so think about relocating the stereo to the hvac location and putting the screen in the lower portion.

as far as deals goes...
i believe i get 15 percent off at walmart.com
"team national" my parents are part of that ... idk google it
its a club thing where u get discounts on stuff. ill ask my rents

btw when are we gonna go shooting?

you can get everything you need for a carputer from this site: http://store.mp3car.com/?Click=9830

i went through the same thing a little while ago trying to decide between a dual din dvd player and a carputer which can be had for around the same amount. The biggest difference is that you would have to do a custom build and install for the carputer. after researching both of them i decided wait and do some other mods first.
