My brakes started acting funny recently. Sometimes the pedal would be very mushy, and sometimes it would be cock hard and the calipers would drag.

So last night I replaced the brake master cylinder and brake booster with the larger version from an automatic S14. I bled the brakes, using a clear rubber hose while bleeding so I could visually check to make sure all the air was out.

The pedal is still a little mushy, but not as bad as before. Also, the passenger side front caliper makes a clunking noise when I brake. I'm thinking I need to rebuild the caliper. If that doesn't work, I'll just buy a new one from autozone for $80 or whatever they are.

Anyway, I was just looking for a second opinion (or 3rd, 4th, 5th, nth)..

Yeah I'd agree that its likely the caliper. Probably sticking.

Cool. I guess I'll rebuild it next chance I get. It couldn't hurt.

Yeah, probably not that expensive either.

just buy a new caliper. its cheap enough to justify not wasting the time to rebuild it. are you sure you got all the air bled in the master before it went in the car? we run into that problem all the time. does the car have ABS also? if it does, the ABS block could be holding air and keeping a mushy feeling.

No abs. Just z32 brakes on the front, stock on the rear, s14 auto bmc and booster. One thing I think I may try before rebuilding or replacing the caliper is bleeding the car again. When I bled last night, the pedal built pressure, but then lost some when I started the car. So I'm thinking I should bleed until it feels good, start the car up, then turn off and bleed again. I'll keeping doing this until the pedal keeps good pressure.. if it does eventually.
