View Full Version : Steering
Which do you prefer for driting, manual or power steering? I personally like manual bc i get better road feel and good reaction. If any of you would like to shed some light.

i would like to get a manual steering rack. but i havned found any for any reasonable price
Can you say why and if you don't like power steering and why you like manual? Rack and Pinion is by far the best steering out right now.

He's talking about a rack and pinion that was never power assisted before, My rx7 had a manual rack in it awesome.
i know, i just want to hear the forums opinion on assisted and non assisted steering and how it helps and doesn't help in drifting. I'm an amatuer and want some insight from more experienced drivers.

what is better for daily use?

If you have an S13/14 then I assume youre talking about converting a power rack to manual. In my opinion keep the PS intact, you will appreciate it. Just deleting the pump isnt great at all.

With a real manual rack there isnt much of a diffrence in driving daily, my rx7 was still really easy to turn.

Im thinking about getting a manual rack for my FC, is it worth it? How does it compare to your S chassis with PS?

Honestly my fc would turn circles around my s13 easily and even steered easier with 17x8's up front
ok this thread went to shit. On your topic, would the steering ratio be quicker on pwer steering or manual steering?

yeah thats what i amtalking about. but that would only be for a track car. not a daily. ps is awsome. my ps went out on my last car an it dint bug me that much but sometimes i wished i dint have to turn it like 20 times to get into a parking space

Yea but on a manual rack it was designed to not have assistance so its not as hard to turn as a assisted rack without a pump.

mmm idk. ive only drift my s13 with power.but it went out for a while an it was a tad bit harder to control the drift

thats why i want to try a manual rack. cuz i know no pump made it a lot harder but i drove a corolla whit a manual rack and it felt super great
ok so you guys like the opwer steering. cool umm..i know when the pump goes out..it's alot harder to steer than a stock manual steering...get what i'm saying? ok nother question...you guys have driven a stock(never assisted) manual steering car right? you didn't like the road feel and response of that kind of steering? the car will also counter quicker with manual steering (ya know when you let the wheel go and it spins) i just want to hear what you guys think.

Yea i think manual is better all around as long as its a real manual rack

ive only drive one car with a manual steering. a corolla. it feel awsome. it had reall good response. but i never slid it or anything like that just test drove it around down.
the road feel with manual steering is so much closer to the actual car, you can really feel the limits of the car. thanks for mature responses guys. would any of you care to discuss drifting itself?

what are you talking about?
taking off the power steering pump off vs power steering?
or actually changing the gears to a different rack to pinion ratio for assistance?

lets talk about all of it. personally i love my power steering for daily. but i have heard that (a real) manual is better for drifting because with powersteering you have a tendancy to over do it. i drove yoco's 240 and it had a capped rack. i didnt drift it, i didnt like it. he drifted it, didnt seem to be a problem for him. he clutch kicked in first turning left out of a neighborhood got it nice and sideways. scared me i wasnt expecting it.

well this is such a rookie question, if you asked me. i feel embarrassed answering this.
but to tell you which one is better, is like telling you a donkey can swim in salt water faster than in fresh water.
keep your power steering for drifting.
dont need to spend extra making it all 'special'.
you can throw on a quicker ratio adapter at the cock shaft and all, but it really isnt necessary, in fact its just preference, and faster in counter steering if you have bad reflexes..
most rally cars have them to make sudden vital correction in mid drifts and turns and also to help reduce lethargy in those long fighting sessions. some drifters use them, some dont.
but other than that, you can win a D1GP competition with a stock rack and power steering in any given day.
I like power steering. I like to talk with one of my hands while I'm drifting so that makes it easier...

what i was asking is, do u prefer manual or power steering for drifting. I wanted to hear some perspective from experienced drivers. Power steering is easier to drive around town, but does it help in drifting? Alot of people overcounter with power steering and there isn't as good road feel with PS. shed some light

I honestly don't think that makes a lick of sense.
I have excellent steering response and road feedback from my car and I still have power steering. In my limited experience, I've seen that power steering doesn't make or break any drivers. As has been said throughout this thread, it's all personal preference. There isn't a set answer that, Yes it'll improve your driving, or no, it'll make you suck. It doesn't work like that.
From what I've witnessed, and this is just from what I've seen, different people want different things from their car. Some are trying to get every last pound shed and every last hp number the can manage so they pull things like A/C and Power steering out of the car. Some don't have a choice because of the engine they decided to use. Others believe that capping the power steering rack gives a greater response to turn in and counter.
Then you have those who enjoy power steering simply because it makes life so much easier. I fall into that group, believing in "why work harder to do the same thing". If you're referring to simply bypassing a power steering pump on a power steering rack, I don't think that's very wise. It takes a lot to lumber through turns with over a ton of metal, rubber and glass. Not to mention that low speed manipulation is almost out the window. Once you get going it isn't so bad, but it's still a lot more than the kid WITH power steering is going to do.
If you're talking about taking out your power steering setup and going with a manual steering setup, then that's something else. From what I've heard the ratio is changed so steering effort is a lot less. In that case, that's another thing that's up to you. I've seen some racers do it in autocross, but to me it's not worth the hassle because the money you spent on making your car handle the same as it did before, you could have purchased better tires, some suspension bits and entry fees to a few events.

this must be what people that dont drift ask other people who dont drift.
power steering is a must. period. end of discussion.

Keep power steering.
I got a hernia from having no working PS when I was out sliding, if that helps you make up your mind.

if you lube up your power steering knuckles with wd40 every other week, you dont need power steering.
you can feel the road and response better without power steering, with the use of wd40 on your wet knuckles.
wet knuckles. and do a swap. yeah.
