Which LSD is best for drifting a 1-way, 1.5-way, or 2-way differential?

Where's Shawn Shawn when you need him?

I don't know, I'm pretty sure my locker only works on acell so, I'm guessing it's going to be one of those things where there is no "best" only the one that is best SUITED towards your driving style.

1.5 only locks on acceleration

2 way locks on acceleration and deceleration

we've discussed this about a dozen times on this website

use your 1337 book reading skills to read the forum, heres a hint: use the search button before asking a question. Saves from the flaming, and helps me not want to punch you in the throat.

It's all personal preference.

If you look at what D1 guys use it varies per driver. 2 way mostly but there are lots of 1.5 ways being used last I looked.

2 way locks 100% on both accel and decel and 1.5 is 100% on accel and 50% on decel. So if you are in a daily 1.5 might be easier... I think thats what Andy was using in his BMW.

I drifted my friends Z w/ a 1.5 way nizmo and it felt awesome out there!

I have a R32 VLSD and it feels ok but the Nizmo made it feel like a POS! haha...

hah the pole...

but i like welded but i need a 2 way for long corners where you have to let the car just silde and the welded slows the car down a hell of alot more than the 2 way does.

welded also likes to try and throw the car around.

Infinite
09-01-2008, 06:44 AM
that all depends on tire size
with 225s i had that problem
with 255s it wasnt nearly as bad
with 275's all the problems went away, car was an absolute blast to slide

I run a 2 way kaaz in my daily/drift thing. Nothing you cant handle on the street and imo best option for a dedicated drift car.

Which LSD is best for drifting a 1-way, 1.5-way, or 2-way differential?

it depends on your average piston speed.

I understand that 1way locks on accell, 1.5 locks on accell and partial on decel, and 2 way locks on both accell and decel. 2 way would make you slide in lift off technique and would slide you on hard accelleration. So, if you were advanced enough to do these techniques wouldn't the 2way be the best choice?

v-empire
09-01-2008, 05:47 PM
no. because you would still lack on piston speed.

when piston speed is increased with velocity of the crank and pelvic thrust, the pistons must be stabilized by the rods and vibration must be minimize to ensure less friction and geometry loss in the butt.

Levi
09-01-2008, 05:50 PM
Does that not have to do with gear RATIO? Harmonic balancer & engine blueprinting takes care of vibration. Please explain further.

I heard a 2-way is really hard on your piston return springs also. It wears them out really fast.

ok thread jack:
with a welded diff.
is it true that it kills tires?
true that its scarey in the rain?
is it just plain out better to just save up and go 2way?
with a welded does it jack up all your other parts(axels, bolts, etc.)

Yes its harder on tires, depends on how much city driving you do though. If you turn sharp alot you're tires won't last as long. Same thing goes for in the rain, just slow it down a bit and be ready if the back swings and you'll be fine. Yes its better to get a real diff but it works until then, just has lots of drawbacks. Yes its harder on your drivetrain, you need some slack and slippage or you get serious torque loading on all the parts. The good thing is many people who run welded diffs don't run real wide tires so the tires generally give up first before you break anything. As for what type is better, in a purely technical sense a 2 way is better. Each driver has their own style and this may not work well for them so to each his own. I prefer helicals myself but I personally don't drift, I do road racing and autocross aggressive clutch units cause too much sliding on tight corners though they do offer more control over tail movement when a slide does occur.

Welded diffs are cheap for a reason. I have personally know 5-6 people that have been stranded on the side of the highway because their welded diff decided to throw metal through the diff cover at 80mph. If you dont drive your car very much except on a track, I would say a welded is fine. For a daily, though, I would rather have a VLSD.

Welded is fine for any driving, depends on if it was done correctly.. i will never get rid of my welded.

i love it in the rain. its not scary, just dont take sharp hairpin turns like a jackass and youll be ok.
