get the SR. It's easier to save for little shit a bit at a time than to save up another chunk for an SR.

^^ Same here. I know everyone says suspension over power, which I agree. BUT in this case, you'll blow the money on smaller things and not have as much to show for it. Get the SR now, then save up for one item at a time in that list you have.

yeah you should be fine with stock sr. hell im only running lowering springs with mine. does your 240 have factory stock suspension? if it does your car will now sit a little higher in the front due to the less weight with the sr.
and if you cant handle it. learn to!

honestly i'd set the car up first... suspension, etc
learn to control the car with the new upgrades then worry about power
a 240 with proper suspension mods is a whole different beast than a stock suspension 240

But really, if you have the cash for an SR, I'm assuming you have around $2500 to spend on a mostly stock S14.
Personally, with that cash, if you do the labor yourself, you could get:
Decent set of coilovers: $800
Do a full poly bushing kit: $130
Some tension rods: $100
RUCAS: $130
Subframe collars: $50
Some fatter sway bars: $200ish,
Some wider wheels, like some Z33 wheels or Cobra wheels: $300ish
Tint and a bumper. About $200
As well as some money still in your pocket, and to get all the routine maintenance and shit done.
Hell, you could even pick up a nice steering wheel, or put some good tires on your shit with the remainder
Not to mention selling a good amount of the stock shit, and making a little money back.
But I suppose I look at it that with that kind of cash, I could do alot more to my car than just a stock motor swap to make it as enjoyable.

wes has a good point... more bang for the buck... you could always do sr in like 2 years... im 20 now, and i miss my sr though. even though it was a broke piece of shit, at least i was the only guy in the neighborhood with a sr...

I'm figuring if he gets the SR done now, next month he could start with bushings, or used coilovers, and go from there...
sullen
08-31-2008, 01:40 PM
true, but he is 17.... part timer job.... not alot of money that CAN be saved. theres gas, cell phone, insurance.... and no money coming in practically. either way, he is gonna have fun with the car. whether he gets boost, or does handling. swapped suspensions on 240s make them into a completely different car. a nice handling car... and boost is just plain fun...
I can see the logic on both sides.
I suppose I just like to say I have alot of goodies for the money, rather than just one thing.
But shit, if he wants a mix, he could just do a low boost KAT with all that cash, and still have money for suspension.
sullen
08-31-2008, 01:46 PM
very true wes...
I'm all about bang for buck.
And I mean, if the kid has like, $2500 to play with, I'd rather spend 2k or less, and have alot of fun for cheap, than blow the full $2500 just to get 200whp, ya know?

no, ive thought about kat as well. i wouldn't mind doing that, but the problem becomes doing it right. i mean, you know how expensive a aem ems is? fuck me running.... they need to have some kind of a credit line with that shit, like the tooltrucks...

Not even remotely required to "do it right"... that's overkill for a KA...
That's craziness...
Just get a Calum RT if you want to go nuts... any ECU tune for that matter.

If I could do it all over again, I would get suspension and a diff first, then a motor swap.
I regret being boosted on some shit suspension.

I loved having boost, I didn't have a SR but I had a CA. :] I had tokico shocks with intrax springs. Ride was stiff as fuck I was very happy with my suspension. When I had Gr-2's and sportlines it felt bouncy to me sometimes. Personally I would open a roth IRA but thats me. I don't feel like dumping money into cars anymore. Get a civic :]

do the sr, so you have it, cause its harder to get another 2500 all at once than getting 2k piece by piece. like get the sr, save DD that, then get coilovers. then save and keep doign that till ur suspension is fully built. and ull have a sr.
_yoshi
09-01-2008, 06:26 PM
maybe ill just get suspension first till my ka goes to hel :) i hope like in a year
then i will go sr .
and i will get more bitches :)
cjacob74
09-01-2008, 06:29 PM
ho wmany miles are on ur ka, if its over 210k, go straight to sr. just do it and get it over with. cause ull have a running low milage motor, thats produces power.. then u can go to work like normall, after like 3 checks or 4 ull have 800 or so dollors, get suspension, then ull be set for a long time. then add on to the suspension, trust us. do that becuse ull blow it all on suspension once you decide not to do the sr, and it will take you forever to get have the money all at once for the sr.
I always say to do suspension and diff first. Its what I did and I wouldn't have been very happy with an SR in stock suspension car. That car with the KA, coilovers, and a bunch of suspension arms was so much fun to drive. A diff made a huge difference as well...
On the other hand I understand having a large chunk of money to buy the SR now but if you saved up once, you can do it again.
What would be the deciding factor for me is the condition of your current motor. If you have no reason to believe it will go out any time soon, go suspension, and diff and enjoy :). Otherwise, maybe consider the SR so you have a reliable ride.
cjacob74
09-01-2008, 06:45 PM
if he thinks its gonna blow in a year or less. it could just start having problems tomorrow, my buddies ka. its been going out for 3 months now, it looses power constantly, it will die on him, its just multiple things that keeps going wrong, if ur egnine isnt in good condition like flip said, do the sr now.

lol thats what i said. oh suspention then motor.
which seems like the best idea.
but i went - tension rods, rear sway bar, coilovers, 5 speed, 5 lug, z brakes, rucas, tie rods, tie rod ends, new KA motorset after old one blew, and now im looking at needing:
single piece driveshaft
rear toe link
rear traction arms
alignment
front brake rotors + pads
full bushing kit
seats
knockoff dynamat throughout the car
airconditioning
s15 helical / 2way / 1.5 way *w/e i can get a deal on*
then, im boosting the ka.
so yea, i have some work ahead of me lol
honestly i wish i had 3500 2 years ago to put in coilovers, sr, tension rods and rucas.
so, haha you should jsut keep saving your money right now. so you can buy coilovers AND an sr
or
if you wanna not waste a good hunk of your life.
put a diff in your car. drift it stock. and save your money. invest it. and turn it into alot more money.
but that ^ probably wont happen.

If you're thinking that a KA is going to die on you and it's only got ~120K on it... either something is wrong with your thinking, or it has been badly abused by you, or the previous owner...
Check the compression... if it's good... turbo that bitch. 120K is nothing... and at least you know this motor... you'll know next to nothing about any SR you get.
