What is this small silver box mounted in my trunk? It looks stock, and i would guess has something to do with the audio in my car. Is this the fabled SE AudioAmp that i have heard about?

Yes.
should i attempt to bypass it since my head unit is 15yrs newer than the factory amp? i couldnt imagine this little thing producing cleaner sound than a modern head unit.

You are correct sir, although if you are not replacing the factory speakers it wouldnt really matter I don't think (maybe? I have never tried so I dunno, never been an audio-type person anyways :) ). Quazar posted a great link for removing this unit in another thread HERE (http://240atlanta.com/forums/showpost.php?p=323028&postcount=17). It is written for an S14, though the idea should be similar for your car, and is helpful if you want to be able to reinstall the factory amps. If you want to remove it completely and not look back you can simply cut it out of the harness and use wiring diagrams to reconnect everything manually, check THIS (http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=52883) thread on NICO.

bypass it.. remove the amp.. and throw it away.. saves weight and prevents you from being a Nismo-OEM-Fanboy! good luck!

oh BTW.. i dunno if you can call a piece of crap amp fabled.. fabled would be something like... an un-warped S13 rear spoiler for a s13 hatch or headlights that pop up smoothly..

fuckit. im running new speaker wire. i don't think my polks want a 15yr old amp and crap-gauge wire. of course, if im running wire anyway, i might as well just run an amp... ... ... yeah, this lil peice of teenage metal just opened up pandora's box.

Let us know how the wiring turns out. I don't typically mess with car audio much, but I have to rewire to eliminate a short soon..

make sure that your short is with the wire itself.. not with a component at either end of the wiring.
if you're running just a headunit with aftermarket speakers.. you should be okay with stock wiring.

When I bought the S14 the rear speakers were disconnected, seemed like there was prob and amp and sub in the trunk from previous owner.. and the wires look burnt or just really oxidated where they are bare. I tried twisting the wires back on and electrical taping it up, worked for a bit but the speakers go in and out. Could also be a speaker I suppose, eh?
Not sure if they are aftermarket or the original speakers in the car.. they are Fosgates.. but I know from selling Nissan cars for a while that Nissan uses Fosgate speakers in their cars depending on the audio package.
Sorry for threadjack.. OP got his Q answered though. :graypirate:

Bump my thread bitch. makes my epeen bigger! :goodjob: but this site has very little discussion about audio... and im all about discussing it whenever possible ;)
I am an audiophile without the budget to support it.
Ill end up buying cheap audio components for this car's intro system so that i can get a little thump thump, but i refuse to skimp on the wiring. If i decide to upgrade later on ill be able to simply swap out my amps/speaks with minimal effort if the rca's, speaker, remote and power wire are already high grade. this might mean running a 4 channel RCA without having a 4 channel amp. lol. im too anal. :graypirate:
Fortunately Angela has no kicker panels or carpet at the moment, so running wire is going to a breeze! i also just had to buy a new battery, so throwing on my power wires will be a snap too.

Yes.. the short could very possibly be a blown speaker.. also check for wire chafing around where the speakers are and check your connections. Oxidized wire by itself won't lead to a short.
