View Full Version : Soft brakes?

When I put on the brakes nothing happens until like half way down the pedal. After half way there is allot of pressure. What could be causing my brakes to be so soft? I have new pads and the fluid is full.

Bleed the brakes

Starting from farthest wheel from the MC to the closet.

I'll try that. Can a car sitting un driven in sun for a month mess your brakes up?

It shouldn't, but older cars tend to have issues like that.

Maybe there is a tiny leak that let an air bubble in

Or, worse case is the rubber brake lines are dry rotted and or stretched

I was going to say this. Also, I didn't pay too much attention in science class, but if I'm right, heat can cause fluids to compress and therefore decrease pressure, maybe when the fluid gets cold it will expand and restore your pressure, but then again, I might have it the other way around. When I got my ss brake lines put on I took them to a mechanic down the street and had him put them on. Afterwards he used a brake fluid pump to constantly pump fluid through the system to bleed the air out. Well he didn't do it long enough and it had air in the lines, I drove home and it was really bad, I had an inch of pressure at the floor, everything else was nothing. If you need help bleeding your brakes and feel like coming to Woodstock I have no problem helping you bleed them out since you probably don't have speed bleeders you will need someone to open and close the bleeders as you pump. Or you can go to Autozone and get a hand pump or just get speed bleeders (my suggestion). And if you want to come by my house I still have like 2 big bottles of Valvoline synthetic fluid, so if you're interested, let me know.

Ok I wasn't sure. That kind of stuff confuses me.

Also since we are prolly dealing with a fairly old car here, check to make sure your lines are in good shape. If they arent when they heat up the rubber becomes alot more maluable so when you push the brakes the rubber with expand because you are forcing liquid through them. I had this problem on my Spec before I did SS lines. Everything was flawless til the lines heated up then it was squishy scary time... lol

Might be BMC. Change that if everything was checked and fine.

I have a newer BMC, I have never installed it though.

fun fact. water is the only liquid that expands when cooled.

water doesnt expand when cooled. it freezes and lets air in :P
