Ok, as most of you know, I have a 96 S14 with an S13 SR. Yesterday I drove it for the first time in about a month, and everything went without a hitch til I got on my street, and all of a sudden it would not go into any gear any more. After jumping up and down on the clutch a few times everything was fine again and I was able to get all the way into the garage. Then after a while I came out, got in it again, put it in reverse, pulled out of the driveway, put it in first and went down the hill, as soon as I tried to go into second, that was it, no more gears. As if the clutch were not pressed in at all... So I said 'this sucks , I'm right in front of my house and the car won't move. After a few seconds of looking dumbfounded, I turned off the car, shifted it in reverse, and cranked it up again letting it lurch back til it started moving, then backed it into my garage.
I figured it was the slave cylinder, even though I had full pedal feel which made me doubt it, I said what the heck, its felt a little weak for a while, and they're only 18 bucks. So I change it out, and pedal feels better than ever after its bled. Of course, now I know for sure that the fork is moving in and out because I've watched it.
Ok, first diagnosis was wrong so now I'm thinking what the hell could it be? Transmission obviously works, clutch never slipped, I wasn't abusing it recently... and the car will still move just fine in gear. Only thing is the clutch will not disengage. And it blows my mind that it didn't work, then worked again, and then quit working again... doesn't make sense if I'm thinking something slipped off the fork inside where the clutch is.
So that's where I ask the question, "what happens when a throwout bearing goes bad? I've always wondered what could really change if the bearing was to take a dump, cause knowing how a clutch mechanism works, I can't imagine it not still doing its job...
The only other clue is the fact that the bearing was making noise for a good minute, and I just ignored it, and now when the car is running, there is no more noise...
