View Full Version : Nagisa rails + Recaro...

As Nagisa advertises, their seat rails for the S13 will fit with a Recaro Pole Position (standard) but NOT an XL.

Well, that's partially true.

First, details on the seat, Recaro Pole Position (standard):
Full bucket, non-reclinable, FRP shell. Side mount bolts, has holes for racing harnesses, including the submarine belt. Overall, this seat is AWESOME as far as comfort and posture is concerned. I could not possibly think of another seat that I want in my car.

I consider myself a slightly larger than average person, or fat, or however you want to call it. I'm 5'10, 215 lbs, 38" waist. It's a slight squeeze, but it's not discomforting. A VERY supportive seat, and I recommend it to ANYONE that can't get their ass into a BRIDE.

That being said. The seat is a tad too wide for the Nagisa rails, even though the site states it's fine. Which it does, after some modifications that I will go over now.

Basically, the base of the seat has to be mounted on the highest slot of the brackets, with the base of the brackets facing away from the base of the seat. This in turn pushes the seat rails OUTWARD. And I don't just mean that it takes some convincing to get it in place. It made my hatch/gas tank release USELESS, and that was after using a pry bar to position the rails while my friend tightened down the bolts. The slide arm was jammed on top of it, and I couldn't budge the seat. All I could really do was open the gas door, but when you're tech'ing in at events, being able to open the hatch is kind of crucial.

Remedy?

Remove the plastic piece off the hatch release, bend the arm along the flanged edge to where it's flat, so you can now pull it up, and the slide arm on the seat operates normally now. Simple enough, but it was frustrating, knowing that the only reason I was having to do this was b/c of the width of the seat.

OVERALL.

I'm satisfied/happy/eager to beat on it more.

I got frustrated, but when I realized that it was either a) bend/modify some $80 rails and hatch release, or try to sell a $700 seat and get something I can't fit into...no brainer.

Hopes this helps those considering either parts. I'm sure that if you use a narrower seat, you won't have the hatch release clearance issues that I had.

Update from post auto-x:

I had to remove the lowest seat cushion in order to wear my helmet and not cock my head to the side. I have a sunroof in my silver car, so I don't honestly know how much that plays into it.

Comfort wise, seat still felt fine! I think this was a subliminal message that I need to shave some pounds off, though.

The rails, yes, but Recaro = German. Sized better for most of us, haha.

But I really need to lose weight...40 lbs off me is 40 less lbs in the car.

I figured as much. It shouldn't be a huge issue in my 90 since there's no sunroof. It won't have the hatch/gas door release cable either.

If you take out the headliner you get a lot of room back.

What size would you describe yourself as?

I was in the same boat when it came time to buy my seat. I knew I wouldn't fit into a BRIDE, and the Recaro was the largest-frame seat on the market that fit into the S13 so I really had no choice. It's a damn good fit. If you're ever in the central GA area and want to try it out, hit me up.

really, my ass fit pretty well, it was at the shoulders where i didn't really fit. the seat dug right into my back.

^ More on that, the design of the seat pretty much supports your arms right at the 10-and-2 positions on the steering wheel.

I'm just now seeing that I never talked about my post-autocross session after using the seat.

Overall, the seat did exactly as I expected it to do. It kept me planted firmly in place, and the rails did their job of not allowing any movement at all. On top of all that, it was ridiculously comfortable. I didn't have any issues with my hands striking my knees during hard turning like I have had with BRIDE seats, but I believe a lot of that is contributed to the Recaro being fitted better for a larger-than-Japanese person like myself, thus keeping my legs in a more level position instead of being scrunched together.

MY ONLY GRIPE: The position I had to put the seat in so I could get the clutch pedal in all the way was a TAD bit too far forward and it made shifting into second gear a little awkward, but not uncomfortable. However, that was with a stock shifter, and the car is now equipped with a C's short shifter which should negate that issue.

More to come over this summer, when I begin to track the car, and who knows...it might even see a little sideways action.

5'10", and right now, I'm sure I'm every bit of 220lbs. Back then, I was maybe 205lbs. I still fit the seat, but not as good as I did back then. I get out of shape when I'm not driving/racing. :(

I'd rock what you got in there now unless you go full-cage.
