View Full Version : LUG NUT PROBLEMO!!!!

For fucksakes.
I get my car back and one of the lugnuts (tuner style 7 point) are rounded off!!

the fucking thieves were kind enough to torque the shit out of the lugnuts and i had hard time getting all of them loose, all 16 of them. they took the four 'special' key'ed lug nuts.

anyhow..
one is rounded and in attempt to loosen the fucker up, my lugnut socket (tunerstyle 7point) broke.

i tried heating the shit out of it and looseneing it, doesnt work.

now with my socket busted.. im stumped!!

what can i do to get this one lugnut off?..
this is the only thing holding me back from taking the entire suspension off the car and in the new car..

lmk guys..

Can you still tighten it? If you only rounded off the points for loosening, I would say try to torque the shit off of it and just break the lug stud.

Or, just lower the car down slowly and let the load snap the stud.

hm..
i dunno if it'll break the stud... its a new-er stud on the bolt on spacer i had on there..

but the thing is, i cant drop it because other three corners have nothing on em at all..

oh.. i couldnt tighten it.. but i'll have to get a new socket and try that.

Doesn't matter if the other sides don't have anything. If they are on stands, just jack up the fucked side, and slowly lower it down with a jack. Should snap off becuase one stud isn't strong enough to support the car.

Also, now that I think of it. I wouldn't tighten it by hand, maybe with an impact or something. You might want to try something like that to get it off.

try hammering a 16mm 12point socket on it

12pt sockets just spin :(
i tried hammering in a 16mm socket 6point, but it still just spins.

we drilled around mine when it got stuck till the lug nut fell apart. If you do this you will need a new stud but thats all of 2$.

babowc
05-14-2007, 02:36 AM
yeah, i have a new stud :)

last time i tried to drill out my seat brackets, my drill bits were torn to nothing.

lolol, how did you drill yours out?

isnt the stud hardened or something?

dremel the bitch out!!

babowc
05-14-2007, 03:01 AM
lloll@ dremel.
i dont own a dremel. but i do have an air die grinder.
i dont have any bits for it, though.

best thing i can think of/heard of right now is drill the sucker out.
i dunno if i can break the stud by using my impact b/c my air compressor is a weakling.. doesnt deliver enough air for my impact to work @ full pressure.

thats why you buy bits at harbor freight. Harbor freight sells them bitches cheap (and anything else you will ever need).

we drilled where the lug meets the stud all around it till it fell off (they were open ended lugs).

Personally it it were me.. I would turn the wheel to full lock, and just kick the shit out of the wheel until it broke. :)

yup, mines open ended.
haha Tyler, mad man.
its on the rear..
i thought of even unbolting the damn spindle assembly from the chassis, but decided that is WAYY too much work for a goddamn stud, lolol!

If you just want in out, find the closest fitting socket you can find, fill it up with JB Weld, and stick in on there. Wait atleast 24 hours and it should come out just fine. Done it more than once.

I say drill... The JB weld idea is good too... That would probly work just fine but it takes a while.

HAHA!
i did this actually.
waited more than 24hrs.
it just broke loose, i was thorougly disappointed in JB Weld today.

it doesnt smell as bad as people say when it burns.. interestingly

Drilling lug nuts is a pain, if they are smooth on the end.

If you have any way to cut the end of the lug nut, you could probably bust it up with a chezel (sp?) and slize away at it.

That was my next suggestion. Heat the shit out of it.

yeah, monday, i'll go get a socket from discount tire and try to loosen it up that evening.
if it doesnt work, i'll either
A, according to my dad) burn it out with oxy/gas.
B) drill it out
C) cry

haha great minds think alike.
i heated the SHIT out of it, my wheel was bubbling on the finish.

then i hammered on a closest fitting socket to it, after my 7pt. socket broke, and went to town.. :spin:
lol

Oh, I have also seen shops do this with a special tool. Might be easier to just let them do it.

Tyler

Nothing like BFHs and wife beaters (not the shirt)

You could always just take the car for a spin with one lug nut, it should come off.

yeah, tire places have tools that can get off any lug nut. i had some of those keyed locking ones on a car i bought and never had the special socket, so i took it to a place and they got those suckers off. the best way i can describe it is by reverse drilling it???

babowc
05-16-2007, 03:50 AM
oooh yesss.
drilled,
burned,
melted.

its been drilled half way then i ran out of bits.
i burnt/melted the lugnut half way and i ran out of O2.

how convinient.
Discount tire doesnt even have the type of lug socket I have, so after hearing that, I chucked the sucker down the hill.

Now.. i need to go buy two or three more drill bits 7/16ths and get to town.

Very nice, I paid $15 for a "quality" drill bit and after about 15 seconds of drilling, its gonnneee.

Sucks..

When you are drilling use a lot of lube!!!!! It will prolong the life of the bit.

babowc

i see,..
its hard to do that b/c i'm actually horizontally drilling, instead of vertically.
with the high speeds and horizontal-ness, the lube just flings everywhere or drips everywhere.

sucks ass..

Maybe get a hose with running water to pour over it while you drill...

so u got it off?

i was gonna say just weld a socket or a tool to the lug nut

haha its off alright.

couldnt weld due to limitation in space.

drill ftw!

yeah
this was an open ended lut nut..
i just drilled thru it.
