View Full Version : Best way to pull a balljoint
I'm sure those of you that have worked on the suspension of our cars know how much of a pain it is to get the ball joint on the lower control arm seperated from the spindle. If you use a ball joint seperator you will likely rip the rubber cover to shreads.
Anyone have a trick to get these out? Thus far I simply put the bolt on the top so I don't damage the threads and bash the crap out of it with a 5lb hammer.

theres a thing where you use a bolt to "push" the threaded portion out...
at least there was when i changed out the tie rod ends..
maybe lots of lube and gentle hammer action?
haha.. gentle hammer action.....

go to autozone and rent a balljoint puller
go to autozone and rent a balljoint puller
That kinda like a c-clamp with both sides and a thing that screws down?

some are, but others are a big piece of metal that looks like a wedge with a slot in the middle, place at base of ball joint, beat it like it owes you money.. done

I have one. Thats what always breaks the boot on mine... That is why the boots on my current ball joints are torn... :( I even tried pulling the boot back but it still damages it.

Naw i don't use it to put the new one in LOL. Don't see how that would work at all...
Sometimes I need to pull the LCA out but don't want to put in a new ball joint so I can't destroy it.

i have a balljoint popper but it tends to rip the rubber. i learned from a guy at the shop if u use a good sized hammer and hit the side of the tie rod end or w/e u need to pop it out of it will pop out. ive tried this and it works very well and saves the rubber.

ANOTHER casualty? LoL..
Tyler
LOL! another... Doing DOING! Yah I went and pulled that LCA a couple days ago. We'll get on pullin more shortly. The rubber boot on that one was ripped too but it will do in the mean time. I used one of your wheels as a stand :-D.
Oh and using my press on the ball joint might work but its hard to get it in there since it's still stuck to the spindle. Getting the ball joint out of the LCA is the easy part. Odly enough vladi was up at the shop when i went and was poping his balljoint out of his LCA so i helped him do it...

I tore the shit out of mine, so I just said 'fuck it' and got new LCA's from PDM Racing. They come w/ Whiteline bushings, and the ball joint is already pressed in, ready for installation.
Oh, did I mention they're $67 shipped each?
