feel free to move this thread if its not in the right place.. i thought it fit here
i've been looking at some gauges...
the autometer sport comp ultra-lite..
what is the difference in full sweep and short sweep ??
i am getting oil pressure, water temp, and maybe a A/F mixture..
do i need mechanical or electrical ??

Please god do not get a A/F gauge. They do absolutely nothing but annoy the shit out of you. You have to understand that they read off the stock 1v Narrowband 02 sensors. Which will tell you absolutely nothing about your motor, and will just sweep back and forth the entire time.
Other then that.. They are cheap guages, but should be good enough for your application. If you wanted something excellent, and extremely accurate. I would suggest Defi BF's, or Greddy P/W/H. Both incredible displays, and allow you to program. And also display's your peak, which is a great tuning tool.

Defi is the way to go. Love there gauges.

im my DA9 i ran Autometer sport-comp oil pressure, boost, volt, and a a/f. the a/f was used in the event of vac leakage. all my gauges are electrical except the autometer boost gauge, and the oil pressure which uses a electrical line connected to a oil sending unit. you'll want to have a bung welded to the downtube and a block plug so u can have a wideband installed at testing time. other then that im using those same gauges in my Silcoupe, and DEFI BF meter gauges in my Sileighty which is all electrical and uses vac line from intake mani for boost.

what are the main basic necessary gauges on a turbocharged motor?
WB02?
boost.
fuel press.
oil press.
water temp.
exh. temp.
would that be all?..

You don't really need an in car FP gauge. Just one on you FPR is sufficient.
And it depends on you if you want a WB02 installed all the time. I personally do. But I like to keep close tabs on my car.
You could just install a bung that you have plugged up normally and unplug it when you tune so the shop can put their Sensor in there.

yeah.
i guess if you ahve a solid tune, you dont really need a wb02..
wb02 sensors *arent* cheap, and if it shits out on ya, :(
it'd be nice to keep visual of the afr though.

I've had mine for over a year, and its been fine.
Why do you say they are cheap?
And yes, its always good to have a idea what your AFR is. Maybe your Fuel Pump just died. Or an injector. I couldn't drive without one on any mildly built car. Stock motor though.. Who cares.

u dont need to buy a wide band sensor, shops who tune will have them. like i was sayin in post 5 just have a bung welded up and blocked off untill test time
hellfire

You can get them at any exhaust shop. And normally they will just hand it to you for free.

yeah,
i meant though if you want to keep tabs on your afrs.
anyhow.. i plan on chipping my ecu, and i already have a wb02 so :goodjob:

yep. i'd for sure get an egt too. just don't put it after the turbo

o yea that is what i meant lol. my b.
yea, put the sensor before the turbo. 'cause who cares how hot the exhaust is after it, right?

My EGT sensor is after the turbo. You do realize that putting it before the turbo creates a risk of it hitting the turbo if it ever melts and falls off. Or if the whole you had to make ever decides to send some spare metal into the turbo.
I had mine before the turbo and didn't like it.

i dont see why it shouldnt be put after the turbo..
the exhaust gas temperatures wouldnt be drasitcally different..
i have seen ppl put it in the 4th runner on KA..
Any reasoning behind putting it before the turbo which means cutting a hole in the mani..?
Wedge

Faster response if you put it before the turbo. Not that it tells you anything besides your exhaust gases are hot. And by the time you notice it and react you're screwed anyways.
People typically put it in the 1st runner because it's supposed to be the leanest. I guess we don't care about the other 3, nothing ever happens to those.
Oh and switching to behind the turbo, the EGTs did go up about 100-200 degrees.

^^^ that's the purpose of having a temp guage though. if it get's hot enough to melt the probe, there's probably something worse going on. i know the turbine is designed to handle butt-loads of heat, but i'm not sure which would handle more, the turbine or the probe. i've never seen probes both in front and behind at the same time, so i'm not sure if what the temp difference would be, if any. but like i said earlier, i'd rather know what the temp is that my turbo is dealing with, not how hot it is after it

autometer gauges might be cheap but they are good at what they do and they have definitely proven themselves. i've always used autometer mechanical gauges in the past and have had great experiences with them but do yourself a favor and (as everybody else is saying too) don't get the a/f gauge - you might as well just get yourself a Nightrider light instead.

hmm
what if you keep your wideband installed... will the A/F gauge work.
id kinda like to have one that was accurate just incase something goes bad...
dun want things going boom on u ...

Most widebands now come with guages. Like the XD1 and AEM. I have the LM1, and while it does display the A/F, its not a guage. I'll buy the guage add on soon...

it can do more than just a wb02 iirc..
its sitting on top of my computer, but i havent had a car to install it on, lol.

Heating and cooling of metal will make it break. Any metal. I don't care what it's made out of. It's just a matter of time. It's been reported (since people don't lie on the internet) that it has broke off and made the turbo go boom before. So take that as you will. It doesn't do much anyways, if it was me, I would have a different gauge there.
