A welded diff if done properly, but it isn't as kind on the street. Rough on tires.
But a true limited slip would be better.

ohhk. cus i have heard that welding your diff is the better of teh 2 choices...but the roads here are horridd.

If you pick up a good used LSD for $250-$350 you will save that money in tires alone within the first year. (not calculating tires used for drifting)

Welded diff is the cheap, easy way to get a full time locking differential.
There are people that swear by it, and others that have horror stories to tell.

Yeah I know of two.... let's just say you must use self control.

welded is good
always guarenteed to be locked
2 way is the only lsd i would get
Dont weld it yull spend more in tires than its worth, hell there is a LSD on craigs for $200

welded you will tend to understeer, 2 way will give you the speed, grip, and lock that you need, but underneath clutch type is welded, then viscus, then open. in that order.

if you plan to do a DD and it be your drift car too. I would go with the LSD.
but for straight drift. go with the welded diff, cuz it will make the it easier to slide and put less stress on the rest of the car cuz the inside tire is never going to have any traction making it able to drift with less power.

More like. under that is Welded, Viscous, Helical, then open
JJ Alfano

helical is garbage for drifting, hence the reason I wouldnt even consider it worth the investment to put on the list.

Right....Better that people know helical is DOWN on the list tho =D not everyone does.

Who said we were only talking about drifting?
I'd rate a helical above a viscous...and in some situations, above a 2-way. Seeing as how I'm building my car for HPDE, I have an S15 helical instead of a 2-way. To each his own.
But yes, I do agree that the helical is less desired for drifting. But only listing why it's undesired rather than stating it's strong points kinda takes some credibility away from your post. Just my thoughts...

They are great for road racing/autocross
Photonic
06-04-2008, 04:49 PM
But for drifting they are horrible because they are designed to STOP the very thing that you are doing during a drift. you can sustain a power slide, But when you try to transition the diff makes it EXTREMELY difficult by then attempting to Shunt torque to the wheel with MOST grip to balance out the car.

You are right but I never said they are great for drifting did I?
You didn't mention that they are shit for drag racing either.
I was merely backing up a point that Helicals aren't Garbage.
Not everyone that owns a 240 drifts.

welded is good to start with cause its cheap and you get the feel for drifting but when your ready and you have a decent amount of money i would get the 2 way lsd..

For grip the best is helical.
for drift the best is 2 way. then welded. then vlsd.

yeah i've been told welded is better but breaks easy.
All I'm going to say from running/driving both.
VLSD is nice for a car to drive everyday. I had one in my hatch. It was quiet and mine locked pretty well, not to mention none of the welded wheel chirp and bullshit.
I've yet to drive my hatch since I put the welded in it, but I drove a buddys coupe with a welded around last weekend. All I'll say is the tire dragging can get on your nerves, but its always locked, and is a decent amount cheaper than a VLSD.
If its a car I was gonna drive everyday, I'd personally get a VLSD.
If its just something to raise hell in or play in, I'd get a welded, or if you're broke, ha.
I've never driven a 2way, so I'll just give the opinions on which two I know rather than reading over the internet.

i've heard welded diff is rougher.. and breaks easier.

06-07-2008, 01:18 AM
woohoo! thanks jj
and yes welded does break easy..just yesterday we went drifting then on the way home my friends sohc (rice) coupes differential broke and the wheels locked up causing him to go straight towards the woods..sooo..with all this said..
the best and safest way is lsd..or vlsd.;-)
Welded diff breakability really is dependent on who welded it.
Most people I've talked to and asked to have one welded have told me the same thing. "Wes, theres no way for me to guarantee it to be honest, its gonna last 10 minutes or 10 years" "What the fuck do you mean" "Wes, I can weld, but its welding some gears together, its not gonna be bulletproof, so I can't guarantee it"
But seems like I remember someone telling me they had a diff welded by Turbodave that lasted for 3 years.
James (Sofo259) On here welded mine up for me, and tried an old 4wd trick on it. I haven't ran it yet, but from seeing how well his has held up in his coupe so far, I have faith in it. But then again, Kyle Welded Casey (Viperbite) had his S14 welded and that shit broke about a month later when he was driving normally, so who's to say?
To me it just comes down to who knows more what they're doing/has a better welder.
Regardless, I can break about 5 welded diffs before I can buy 1 VLSD. so its more cost effective for me.
Anything can break, just remember that.

it kind of bothers me when people say you mess your tires up more with a welded diff
i never noticed my tires wearing down faster from daily driving
and there are ways around the churping of welded diffs
take your turns wider and if you have to take a sharp turn do it faster and it wont churp as much if even at all
lsd is good and all welded is wonderful though

welded is twitchy, especially in higher horsepower cars. when you start getting into higher speed drifting welded diffs quickly become your worst enemy. 2 way gives you all the lockup, but much more stability and predictability in most situations. VLSD's are good if you're new to the game and still like to quietly drive about town and hit the occasional local drift event or night at the drag strip.

ive got another welded. its not too bad for daily. suck it up and you guys know you love the attention anyways.
if youre considering a welded. take it from my experience and get it welded right.
i had one break on me from a well known local welder.
but if you want it welded right theres only 1 way to do it. the way the offroad guys do it.
pm SOFO259 on here. he's welded numerous diffs and theres no way in hayel it will break. you'll blow your axels first. or break lugnuts.
haha wes said this already. lol w/e
we both rock weldeds :P i have one of james's diffs now. we will see. i dont think its gonna break though lol
