View Full Version : New thought to my Z brakes

Now I've looked around a little bit on this, but I can't find anyone who is using this setup.
I have front and rear Z brakes on my hatch, stainless lines, with the BMC.
Stops great, I love it.
I still have yet to hook up my ebrake.
Anyways, I was up under it yesterday and noticed that one of my rear calipers was leaking a bit. Nothing major, but, a leak none the less.
I've ran them with a stock BMC, and hated it completely, to me the pedal feel sucked, locked too easily, but, I never tried Z brakes in the front with stock in the rear with stainless lines and the Z BMC. I'm just curious if it would ruin the whole braking feel of the car, or if it would feel about the same.

Does anyone know how the pedal feel/brake bias would be with that setup.
As much as I want to run z brakes all around, I really don't feel like rebuilding a caliper, and was curious as to how the stopping would be with a Z master but stock rears. This would also simplify my ebrake as well. I would just go swap everything, but I don't have any stock rear calipers anymore, nor do I want to buy more stainless lines since the fittings are different.

May be a dumb question, I'm just curious if anyone has tried this setup.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Wes

Well, personally I have Z brakes up front and the BMC, everything except the rear Z brakes, and it stops my sr'd s14 great. My brother is running the same setup with no complaints, slows his RB26 powered s14 quick. I can't fend for people that have the Z brakes all around, but I am very satisfied. Hope this helps.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate it.
Alot of people give me the "zbrakes up front with stock BMC are fine" But I hate it personally. Hows the pedal feel, just btw?
Is it pretty firm, or any real slop in it?

The pedal is actually very firm. I absolutely love it. I really dont see how the rear's would affect it that much. There isnt THAT big a difference, unlike changing the fronts where there are 2 more pistons, ya know?

rebuilding calipers isnt that bad. i did it on my E30. used an air compressor to shoot the piston out, changed the seal, and it was a bitch to get back in, but definately worth the peace of mind.

rebuilding is easyyyyyy

but if you must go back to stock rears atleast get an adjustable bias

Alright, so I was thinking.
Has anyone used a 300ZX brake booster with a Zbrake swap?
Is it any different from the 240SX one?

I have Z brakes at all 4 corners with the Z bmc in my s14, I freaking love it. I've driven a car with Z brakes up front, with stock 240 rears, and Z bmc, the pedel feel was almost the same as my car.

Just rebuild the caliper, it will be eaiser and most likely cheaper in the long run.

Or just spend a few extra bucks and get a rebuilt one from the parts store.

i have the exact same problem. my rear caliper leaks, i think im just going to rebuild all my calipers. i've never done it but from the write ups i've seen it looks super easy. i need new pads and an ebrake cable anyways so might as well. maybe i'll paint them while they are all taken apart too.

now i just have to suck it up and spend the $$$

Which Z BMC do you have, 1" or 17/16"? And is you mention the pedal feel being the same with the Z BMC with Z front and stock 240 rears, are the brakes sensitive? Lastly, is the s14 brake booster bigger than the s13 brake booster? I know the automotics are but manual s14 vs manual s13? Thanks. Latez.

My car has the 1 1/16" bmc as did the other car(s13). Both cars have a very firm pedel feel and are very easy to control. I don't know if the boosters are different (I wouldn't think so) but both cars are 5 speed out of the factory.
