How long do you have to break in a freshly built motor??

I'm trying to attend the drift buffet this month and I'm shooting for ~5-10 days to finish the motor.. I have the head and block seperately assembled and I just need to assemble the longblock and I'd be done..

I'm gonna try to get the turbo setup done too, but highly unlikely.

Anyways, back to the Q.

How long does it take to break in a freshly built motor?
As in.. how long does it normally take to seat the rings good?
and what are your opinions on breaking it in "hard" and "soft"??

If experienced individuals could chime in, that'd be alot more informative than guessers!

I already paid :D
IF I cant take the 240 to it, I'll take my S..

more than likely I'll fry the clutch on the S, if I do.

Ok, so I typed a long explanation, but for some reason it did not stick; anyway this guy sums it up:
www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm (http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)
The reader's digest version of the article is: A properly toleranced engine (non-GM) should be broken in hard. However, water AND oil temperature should be stablized. This means just because your water temp gauge is in the normal/middle range the engine is not ready. Typically it takes 10-20 for oil to get up to temp using the 1/2 redline rpm, 1/2 throttle suggestion.

Broke in my new Nissan truck the "factory" way and it was painfully slow and only got mediocre gas mileage.

I had my brand new Nissan Sentra up to 120mph 20 minutes after I left the dealer lot and it is one of the fastest stock SR20DEs and got over 30mpg average with a high of 37mpg!

500-1000 miles. Don't drive it like an old lady. If you are putting in new cams, then follow the manufacturer's recomended break in procedure. If you can't find any, then after your engine is running and all seems ok, then run it at 2500rpm for about twentyminutes. When you take the car out for a drive, go through the gears quick without getting the rpm's up, then when you get to say 60 mph, let of the gas and let it engine brake to near stalling. Repeat this several times. This will help seat the rings. After that, change your oil and go driving like you normally would.
After all this is done, you can then sit and wonder why you didn't go ahead and put a turbo on it while you had it out.
Good luck.

just dont break it.
drive it smooth 1000 miles
dont tear up the clutch.

dont be afraid to rev a little high up there.
just dont overrev it or cause unnessesary strain on the motor early in its years

Yeah, I heard about letting vaccum take place to seal the rings better..

Cams also need to be broken in?

hard break in after letting the car idle and warm up for 20 min or so.

the rings seat about 90% within those 20 minutes anyways.

then change the oil and go rape it, change the oil again, done

Haha, your like me. Everything else first, THEN get the car running. I like it like that, only because then once it does run, you aren't fucking with it all the time.

crank it up, let it run for 20 min check for leaks shut it down.

Change oil (non synthetic)

Crank it back up, take it ASAP to a dyno to have it tuned for cold start and idle a/f ratios.

Personally i let them rip on the dyno after they are done being cranked up. Properly tuned of course. The baby break in is crap, but do what your engine builder suggests as he will be the one who has to warranty anything.

I wouldnt crank the car until you were ready to have it on a dyno an tuned with a wideband.

otherwise you risk causing severe damage to your fresh engine.

oh an the rings seat within 10 min of operating time if the motor was built right

Sorry.. i rebuilt the motor myself.. I'll have to warranty my own work :P

but.. I still have little doodads to do on it.

A small list of things would be:
1. weld wastegate flange
2. get waterpump
3. get flywheel
4. find out what i want to use for tuning
5. clean engine bay.
6. drop the motor in.

SO.. I have a bit until I can drop it in the car and get it over to a shop to have it tuned.
I'm wanting to tune it myself and I've wbo2 and three different methods to tune..

I'm just slacking off.
I can't make the May 3rd event in Greensville anyways.. :(
