View Full Version : Engine wont crank...why?

have spark (weak)
have fuel
timing is TDC
but my buddies car wont crank
on the way home from cordele it died on him and he had to get it towed, found a seized transmission, and undone brake booster line, and thought that was the problem, fixed both, but its still not cranking
swapped distributer, good NGK plugs, plenty of fuel
he says it may be a problem of weak spark, what would cause weak spark?

I just told him to swap the igniter. But really, I bet its timing.

Or.. Try starting it with Starter Fluid, it ignites way easier then fuel, so even with a weak spark it will start, or if you have flooded the motor, it will start it.

tyler, i said the same damn things!! i should open up my own shop!!!!
on a second thought, no, cause i suck at mechanics

i was gonna say timing.. but mr 240 himself already did!

Wait so it wont crank or it wont start?
JJ Alfano

it turns over, but wont crank

hahaha totally unrelated but Ive always called it cranking when the motor is making revolutions but wont start. Meh, whatever, although I think the rest of the auto world agrees...

we a problem like this in a coupe and we pulled the engine management fuse and put it back in started right up.

it turns over, but wont crank
if it turns over but wont start/run then it might be the timing, imo. I've had the same problem.

Hey one question also, does it have a swap? Turbo? Any non-OEM electronics? Reason i ask is I had a GReddy turbo timer short out on me and not allow a start signal to go to the ECU, obviously not your issue but maybe something to look into. Blown fuses etc is smart too, the way the car suddenly stopped running screams electrical problem...

timing is top dead center

check fuel pump? and fuse?
hellfire
03-07-2008, 01:10 AM
If he's getting fuel, fuel pump is fine.

its probably something stupid... like a blown maf or an insane vacume leak....

didnt see that. sorry lol

jay, with the timing make sure its TDC on compression stroke by pulling the #1 spark plug, and when u turn the motor, it will push the plug out, and you know its on compression stroke, i had the same problem...just check that, its probably the problem

its blakes car, and i wasnt at varsity cause i have bronchitis, and pink eye, gonna rest a few days, until i ATLEAST get rid of the pink eye
i wanted to go, believe me haha
hes getting fuel, and the motor was in time before the event, it just died going home and wont crank again
i told him to check the voltage on the electronics going to his ignition, and to check his grounds, that was what my problem was at the event, thanks to shawnsei, i was able to drive
but back on topic...

Re-check ground wire. lol over and over again for the ignitor. if the timing is correct and your ground wire is plugged in it should fire up......that was my problem i forgot the damn groundwire for the ignitor....sounds like the same shit

compression tested?

compression tested?
Finally someone mentioned compression.
You need three things to start an engine, compression, spark, and fuel. I don't see how it could be timing because he said the car was running and then died.
Has he checked the spark yet?

using the right key to start it?
bring z SR car to me.

Coil packs?
Any bad wires?

ok this is what is going on
car has spark
fuel pump is fine, new fuel filter and newer injectors
went back checked every ground
everything was perfect timing top dead center
even tried a new distributor
tried to 180 it out
tried different ecu
tried swapping coil
nothing works still
its sounds so close it just doesnt fucking ignite the fuel
im about to just give up on and just buy an sr

I know y'all are probably frustrated, but have you tried NEW coilpacks?
If all 4 cylinders are not getting adequate spark, I don't think that re-arranging the coilpacks will work if they might all be bad...
What are the compression numbers?

its not an sr
if your meaning spark plugs i have new ngk plugs
i have not checked compression

Pull the injector rail and test the injectors. If the orings are bad they can flood it to where it won't fire off. I had this same problem, and so did JJ and Godsintheradio.
It's only three bolts. 10 minutes tops.

Well I didn't realize it wasn't an SR.
After seeing dave/v-empire's post saying 'bring the SR car to me' and nobody specifying that it was NOT an SR....
You see where I'm going with this...

maybe thats what he was talking about idk

Werd.
Well, did you by chance check compression?
I know you're supposed to do it with the engine at operating temp, but...
Blake
03-09-2008, 06:05 PM
no i have not go off work yet
but whenever i get home my brother is supposed to come over today or tomorrow and we are going to test it then

When my engine is warm I get 200ish, when it's cold I get 130ish. Base yours off that since you can't warm it up.
Blake
03-10-2008, 12:40 AM
my car wont start lol
so cant really go by that
Iam99x
03-10-2008, 12:43 AM
Which is why I told you the cold compression psi. If the engine will turn over, you can check it.
Blake
03-10-2008, 12:44 AM
alright
ill give it a try tomorrow
to damn tired to do it now lol

Be sure to remove all spark plugs, disconnect the two connectors on the distributor, hold the throttle wide open, turn it over like 8 times max. That should be pretty accurate for a cold reading.

Damn...my kade is now having this problem. Ordered a distributor today and gonna install in tmr and hopefully it will crank.

make sure you get it top dead center
it should work if thats the problem

Did you check your injectors? Several people have had the same problem as you and it was injectors leaking by. Pull the fuel rail with the injectors still in it, and then turn on the switch. You should get no fuel. Try to crank it over and you should get fuel.
If you get fuel when you just turn the switch to on, then you have a leaking injector or a bad o-ring.
Blake
03-11-2008, 01:49 AM
no all the o rings are good
