so, i've always been kind of surprised that i never see anyone mention manual steering racks in the 240 world. i always figured theres some reason that people smarter than me know, so i just let it go. now i see this thread (http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=171644) on zilvia and i see a lot of different opinions about the whole thing so i figured i'd run it by my 240atlanta peeps and see what you guys think.

Interesting.
I had read that a 280ZX rack would swap over with some modification, but seeing one made for the S-chassis is pretty cool.

Explain to me the difference of powerless power steering and manual racks.

Make your own. I didn't read that thread, but just fill one with ATF, and cap off the ends. There ya go.

I heard that if your PS lines leak, flush it with ATF will fix it. Actually my friend has done it and it worked well.

ATF is the same as PS fluid. PS fluid is just clear, and repackaged in smaller, and more expensive bottles.
Tyler
That would explain why some PS fluid I've used as red, and some was clear.

yeah, the lock to lock turning doesn't seem like it'd change much, if any. the 240 power racks seem fairly far lock to lock, therefore getting a manual rack (which the point is usually to give a different ratio to make it easier to turn without PS) would have to take quite a wind to turn, or cut out a good bit of turning radius.

I'm confused. The custom manual rack here has a steering ratio equal to that of a HICAS rack @ 14.9:1, 2.6 turn lock-to-lock. From what I've been reading, shouldn't a manual rack have a higher steering ratio to help with the steering effort. So the manual rack wold be harder to turn then the regular steering rack with the 17:1 steering ratio. Wouldn't it just be better to remove the power steering with the pump, lines, reservor, ect...Iono, I don't really get it so please someone explain. Thanks. Latez.

On Zilvia, someone was having manual racks made for the S13.
It was a GB deal.. go check it out on Zilvia.
Custom made rack.. it was pretty cheap too.
Aluminum rack bushings too.. winnar.

i just tool my rack apart, removed the spool, packed it full of wheel bearing grease, & voila, maual steerin, then i replaced the inner & outer tie rods with OE replacements. its not hard to tun either, my ex gf could drive it & she is only 125 lbs, even sitting still its not too hard

I was checking the page on Zilvia out and that's when I got confused. THe custom rack the guy is selling has a steering ratio the same as the Hicas, 14.9:1 2.6 turn lock to lock. How is this better? I mean why not just removed all the power steering equipment. Wouldn't it be the same thing as a manual rack? I don't know if it worth it to buy the manual steering rack or just have a remanufacured hicas rack. Latez.
