Can I use this stuff on the wheels babowc spraypainted on? i found out on one of my wheels the paint stripped it self so i started using my fingernail to sctratch it off to the polished part of the wheel. as well as the other wheels i would like to get all the paint off. should i use aircraft paint stripper?
one time i was talkin to derrick on aim and he said that there are chemicals that can harm the metal in on the wheel? true?

aircraft stripper is going to mess up the wheels too, but just about anything you use to get the paint off is going to oxidize the metal also
you could strip the paint, clean the wheels, scuff them up, primer and respray them with a diff color paint or something

use paintless paint to get that color.

Chandy,
if you wanna strip that paint, you can use the aircraft stripper.
Easy peasy.
It had red painted spokes before, so you're going to go through that too.
Then you want to clear the wheels so it doesn't oxidize.

yea the red was that hard to come off. i used some sand paper but i dont want to scratch the original wheel. what should i put on so it doesnt oxidize. or what do they use for oem wheels that are polished
Andy, if you leave the aircraft stripped on the wheels, its going to eat all the way to the bare metal. Which means you will either have to repaint them, or polish them.

It is a spray can. Spray some on, let it sit for a while (like minutes, not hours), then spray it off and wipe the area down really good with paint thinner or spirits to get all the aircraft stripper off. Repeat if necessary.

once its on, does paint start comin off?
J Squared
02-29-2008, 08:44 PM
yeah it will start to come off, but its not dramatic or anything. You may need to get a scratchy sponge or whatever those green things are called and coax it off. For the luv of gawd though wear some heavy duty gloves :)

if i m gana have to scrub it off i dont want to scratch off the polished part of the wheel. and once all the paints gone shall i wash off the aircraft stff with wat? and then wat should i use to save the wheel from deteriating

...then spray it off and wipe the area down really good with paint thinner or spirits to get all the aircraft stripper off...
:goodjob:
I wouldnt worry about the green scratchy thing marring the wheels, they are too soft and any marks will buff out with regular polish in no time. I doubt it would mark it at all anyways, but use a paper towel if you want.

what kinda paint did he use on the wheels? if its regular spray paint or the wheel paint from autozone, etc, and youre scared to use the aircraft paint stripper, then use acetone (AKA, nail polish remover). It is 100% safe to use on spray on the wheels and it WONT oxidize. it wont take underlying chrome off, though.
em says that you can sand those suckers down all the way to the metal and polish for a nice silver look.
thats what we have to do to mine:(

Andy, if you didn't take the tires off.. you want to do so, before you strip em with aircraft stripper.
It'll eat away everything it comes in contact with minus metal.
SO.. if you want to strip em down with aircraft stripper, mask the tires.

theres a coat of spray paint and a coat of some i duno red paint. if i sand them down itll leave stractches
Then use a higher grit sandpaper and get them smooth, Andy.

i dont want to scuff up the polished part of the wheelh
babowc
02-29-2008, 09:35 PM
Thats the process of getting polished.
You gradually go down (up, numerically) in grit.
Go from 400, then to 600, to 800, 1000, 1200, wetsand with 2000 hit it with polish, then clear coat it.
You have to clear coat even polished surfaces.

is 300 too low?
babowc
02-29-2008, 09:42 PM
You don't want to make too deep of scratches..
you can start with 800.

so itll go back to original shiny look? what type of polish should be used? rattle can clear coat?
babowc
02-29-2008, 09:59 PM
There is a metal polish @ discount auto stores.. any of those should be fine.
Then you just wipe everything off clean and prep it for clear coat.
Clear coat, you can also buy at discount auto stores.

rattlle can clear coat?
also is ther any way where i dont have to sand. i mean right under the pain is already polished metal
babowc
02-29-2008, 10:06 PM
Get the aircraft stripper.
Stop making me repeat myself...
You're still going to have to sand.
Polishing ANYTHING is a chore.. a big one.
*it's pretty half assed, but I say just strip the paint and paint it silver or something.. polish those 6 spoke wheels is going to take an eternity.

im not. ur makin me repeat my self. its already polished under the paint. i just want tot take the paint off. . are u tellin me i have to sand the polish and re polish,
its actually not that bad. i scrubs 2 times on the red paint and it got to the metal
babowc
02-29-2008, 10:58 PM
It's not really polished.. I know, I sold em to you, lol.
What you're seeing is bare metal.
If you just wanna keep the bare metal look, clear coat the wheel immediately.
If you want to polish it up real good, you'll have to do as I said before.
Are you using the aircraft stripper??

To protect the finish you want left untouched, put a few layers of masking tape down to cover the area.
If the paint was applied really thick, it will not come off fast.
Don't put TONS of the stripper on there, at first, I would recommend putting down a thin, residual layer to see how it will react. Flush with water, or isopropyl alcohol AKA rubbing alcohol after it's been on there for a few minutes and you can tell it's not doing anything else.
THIS STUFF STINGS AND WILL BURN YOUR SKIN TO THE POINT OF PERMENANT SCARS.
The paint will bubble up/flake off, use high grit sandpaper AFTER flushing the stripper out of the area. It will be a long process, and will require a lot of patience.
I recommend wearing saftey goggles, THICK rubber gloves, pants, and a long sleeve shirt.
Of course, all of the above info applies if you're using the same grade stuff that I used to strip paint off planes in the USAF.
